It’s about some veterinarians in the 30’s. It’s slow, doesn’t have any sex, violence, or profanity. It’s wholesome. It’s filmed in the absolutely gorgeous Yorkshire Dales. We love it and have already watched 2.5 seasons in 3 nights.

Based on the James Herriot books written by Alf Wight, a real vet. I’ve not seen the newer version, but the original series has the late great Robert Hardy and had some lovely Yorkshire dialect. I grew up near the area and some of the characterisations of people were very recognisable when I was a kid.

I remember reading those books as a kid. They were pretty interesting if I remember correctly.

Sorry to tell you but it’s all shot on green screen.

Northern England is a desolate wasteland full of ne’erdowells, rogues and naves. Everything is decaying mining towns and abandoned shipyards. The kids are, er, feral and will mug you for your shoes, and, er, hmm, other stuff.

You don’t want to come here, honest.

Source: I live in Newcastle, a famously dead town with absolutely nothing to offer, and definitely no nice pubs or architecture, where the locals literally eat outsiders.

How lucky you are. We’re talking about visiting this or next summer. It would be a huge trip for us, so idk how likely it is, but we’re talking about it. I was checking out the website for the Dales this morning.

If you do definitely go see Conisbrough Castle and York, lots of neat stuff in York. The Holiday Inn in Harmsworth isnt bad at all, has a car park and a nice pool.

Thanks, glad someone finally realised, season 2 episode 9 (maybe 10?)when James has to attend a callout near Whitby as some jet addicts obstruct a cow.

I mean look, if there really was countryside like they portray in the show, do you really think, in real life, everyone would stay in London all the time, and then holiday on some Spanish island?

Nothing that idilic and dream like is real, I mean, that’s sort of the point of the overall story, but I don’t want to spoil it if you haven’t read the books so I better stop there.

Is it based around crime detectives? I’m so burnt out on crime shows and movies. It’s like 75% of the stuff they make now, either from the criminal or cop perspective.

Look up Toby Jones on IMDb

Virtually everything he’s done is brilliant, he’s a national treasure in the UK

No, it’s about two guys with metal detectors pottering around the countryside and generally dealing with life. It had three seasons, then a full-feature special to round it off.

My parents loved this show. We used to watch it after “Jeeves and Wooster” on local pbs. I’ve been meaning to sit down and watch them again with my kids. Thanks for the reminder.

This one is PBS too, but it’s a remake. I never saw, or even heard of the original.

What? They remade it? I will have to look into that, thank you

Yup, and it’s very good. 8.6 stars on IMDb. It’s a refreshing breath of fresh air. We were so tired of every show being murder, or cops, or serial killers, or whatever.

You might like Nightsky. Slower moving series, with a tad SciFi to it. But character driven, and excellent acting.

Have a look at “Dick Proenneke in Alone in the Wilderness” for that kinda mellow vibe. Man’s my hero.
