I’ve been leaving it in for 15m or so?

You mean conditioner? I wash my hair when I get into the shower and leave the conditioner in while I wash the rest of my body, then once I’m done I rinse my hair out. So it stays in for however long it takes to clean the rest of my body.

Anyone with curly hair who is wanting to follow the Curly Girl method of caring for your curls so they maintain their shape better.

Although I don’t much like the term either. But the method does really work.

I always had straight and flat hair and kept it really short for the last 20 years. The girlfriend tried curly girl for awhile and while her hair isn’t really curly, it really made the waves much more dramatic and it looked amazing.

We’re not big on regimented routines though, so while she stopped it after a while, we still get most of the same products, and even just with that selective purchasing, her hair is still nicer and softer than before, and it made me want to grow my hair out, and now I have very handsome looking waves I never thought would have been possible for me.

The Curly Girls speak the truth, even if cowashing and plopping sound like silly things!

Yeah, I don’t religiously follow the steps either. It’s more like a buffet of tips where I sample some of them. I still shampoo, but much less often. My other take aways were to stop using a hairbrush, I rarely use a wide tooth comb anymore either (mostly finger comb in the shower) , and don’t touch the hair while it’s drying.

If I have a party or something, I’ll use gel and let it form a proper cast, etc etc.

It’s great it’s not an all or nothing thing. It lets you see what components make a bigger difference and then you can pick and choose what you do when.

I wish trial sizes were a thing though. GF bought a ton of stuff that either didn’t help or made her hair worse, so there’s a lot of 90% unused bottles, which at least I end up experimenting with, but some of the styling stuff I don’t use so it just sits there forever.

That’d be a good business for someone with more patience than I. Buy all this stuff and sell little travel sizes a la carte. One year I got her a ton of perfume sample so she could find new fragrances without a big upfront expense and she’s really enjoyed that, and we learned Kohls sells a few products like that we’re you get a few samples for the price of a single bottle and it gives you a code to get a discount off the one you like best.

I put the conditioner in my hair, then let it sit a couple of minutes while I wash the rest of my body. When I’m done I rinse it all in one go.

Until I finish showering. It’s the last step I do.

I follow the directions on the container. Mine doesn’t say to let it set, so it stays in as long as it takes me to give it and my scalp a good scrub.

Edit: I also use something called co-wash, not conditioner.

Apparently that means no shampoo, only conditioner…? On the rare occasion that I use conditioner, it goes in after the shampoo is out and stays in for however long it takes me to soap the rest of my body.

For curly hair types, shampoo shouldn’t really be used. Conditioner is used to “wash” the scalp and hair (thus, “co-wash”), rinse it out, and then condition again, leaving it in while you wash the rest of you with soap, and then rinse it all off at the end.

Sit time doesn’t make a difference for my hair so it’s solely down to how much warm water I want and how tired I am (I’m an afternoon-evening showerer).
