I work remotely as the president of an investment-accounting company. Internet connection is super important for me. I have to be on calls and frequently use 50 terabytes of cloud storage.

Why on earth does an investment company need 50 TB of cloud storage?

Sounds like an ex employee using it as a remote plex/jellyfin drive 😳

I have no idea how an accounting agency can consume 50TB of cloud storage… maybe 50k customers with a 1GB excel each? Would a spreadsheet that big even open?

I’ve worked with dozens of large financial firms, and even the largest databases don’t come close to this size. There is either some kind of insane media storage happening or the guy doesn’t know the difference between a GB and TB.

I work in science computing and 50 TB is more than some bioinformatics work uses. There’s no way the person in the article actually uses that much.

Yeah, I’m thinking the drive storage might be 50TB because they got ripped off and he doesn’t realize the actual size of the files.

This place sounds great for certain people. If you like golf, don’t mind instacart being your primary source for groceries, possibly owning a car on the mainland, and are able to afford this lifestyle.

The article didn’t mention how long the ferry ride takes or if it runs 24/7. I can’t imagine the ferry being busy at 3am but I could imagine possibilities when people want to get off the island at that hour.

They said it’s 30 minutes. So not too bad. I’ve lived on a similar island elsewhere and you just don’t leave the island much unless you want to spend the whole day doing things on the mainland.

An island like this just sounds like a gated community with a moat though. No cars, but no grocery to walk to, nothing you need is there, just golf and houses.

Sure I want my city walkable, with better (it’s way below adequate) public transportation but I want to be able to walk to work (I can), to the grocery (I can) to the doctor or dentist (I can) to my kids’ schools (cannot) and to shops, restaurants, parks (mostly cannot). In the city - a living city with jobs and things to do!

I don’t understand living on an island that is just a house farm like any other suburb here, disconnected from everything.

This is the dream. I wish I could afford to live in such a place.
