WASHINGTON (AP) — A proposal to deter states from regulating artificial intelligence for a decade was soundly defeated in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, thwarting attempts to insert the measure into President Donald Trump’s big bill of tax breaks and spending cuts.

The Senate voted 99-1 to strike the AI provision from the legislation after weeks of criticism from both Republican and Democratic governors and state officials.

The reporter kind of dropped the ball when it’s a 99-1 vote and they don’t name the one holdout senator.

The fact that Mike fucking Lee (UT) voted to remove this speaks volumes.

Lee is still a massive chode, but even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Likely a case of what lobby has him deeper inside their pockets. Such a bill would threaten the entire entertainment industry and more.

It could also be that no legislation means no legislation.
You couldn’t, say, introduce legislation to stop AI from being “woke” because this bill would prevent them from doing so.

Why would it be a threat to the entertainment industry? I thought they were all excited about being able to cut costs with AI.

But how effective would such lobbying be? Because if external factors, such as the technological race with China, diminish its effectiveness, how much will industries have to offer?

Don’t get them wrong, they don’t do this for you, or even morals. It just affects other interests too much.

Not sure if he pushed the original measure but he was definitely instrumental in the compromise they attempted to insert into it.
