The headline makes it sound like the “in favour” votes were for death penalty, which is not correct. This was a vote for a moratorium - a temporary suspension - of death penalty.

Yes I checked my own country (Denmark) and that is green, and for Denmark it is decidedly illegal to vote for death penalty.
So the vote was probably about making death penalty illegal.

      PS:
AFAIK it would be against the Eu treaty to vote for death penalty for ALL EU countries.

Yeah I came here to ask about this, because Brazil voting in favor of the death penalty when it doesn’t have it did set off some alarms for me

yeah you could delete the labels altogether and I’d still tell you which color is which vote based on who voted.

for future reference, if you see the US voting with the wartorn, economically devastated, despot-ruled or otherwise suffering nations, or if you see the US voting alone or with Israel, then you can bet that they voted for the worst option.

Seems like the dudes in favor of the death penalty seem to be the usual suspects… And then there’s Japan, who straight up went

for no discernible fuckin reason LOL

Tiny states use pointless votes like this as a chance to curry favour. Sure, china or the us, we’ll vote however you want on this purely symbolic question that will have zero real world impact. Now about that loan…

Note that this vote took place in 2022, i.e. was not recent. For reference: this vote precedes the October 7 attacks (which happened in 2023).

EDIT: the vote also took place two weeks before Netanyahu assumed the office of prime minister again.

        Nevermind then.

Still surprisingly close to vote against the death penalty then in 3 years vote to make it a minimum sentence.

What would be interesting is whether there are any countries that voted differently from what they currently do (ie countries that have the death penalty but voted for a moratorium, or the other way round).

they just made a law that makes being a terrorist a crime with a minimum sentence of death… they call every palestinian a terrorist… then they vote against death penalty in the UN.

they really don’t consider them as people

This would be easier to follow if it included information on whether each country currently practiced the death penalty. If it’s simply every country voting based on what they already do then it’s not very interesting.

In the U.S. the death penalty is simply unaffordable healthcare.

Almost a third of the no votes come from the Caribbean and surrounding land. Figured they’d be more chill for some reason.
