Or people who have mental health issues are more likely to frequently post on social media? The implied causation is garbage.

      this.

Isolated people are more likely to engage online because they have little to no conversations IRL. or people who have mental health issues and mask constantly will be themselves online.

Or people who post a lot have anxiety issues? A need for outside validation that can never be fully met. I wouldn’t say they have a mental health issue.

Out of curiosity, how are “anxiety issues” not a mental health issue? Depression, anxiety, etc. are all mental health issues and there’s absolutely no stigma that should be attached to that.

Clinical mental illness has specific definitions. Feeling anxious sometimes doesn’t meet them. Everyone feels anxious sometimes. No one was “attaching a stigma” to anything here.

The article and my comments have all been focused on “mental health problems”. No one mentioned “mental illness” but you. Those are different things and if you can’t understand that, not sure there’s anything else to be gained in additional discussion.

if talking to people online makes you feel better then fuck those shite articles. if you feel like shit doing it, please take a break.

other than that. I understand the loneliness, that’s why I’m here too, and it helps. especially when it’s hard to find like minded people irl who want to be friends.

take care and stay safe friend.

I’m a little curious if it doesn’t go the other direction

People with mental health problems are more likely to post frequently on social media.

Anecdotally, I have a few friends with various mental health issues. And when I was still on Facebook, it always seemed like their posting exploded when they were having an issue.

It was actually one of the first signs I usually noticed, like “oh shit, Katie’s posting a lot, better make sure her husband is on top of things making sure she gets to her doctor to get her meds adjusted”

When they were doing well, they posted about as much as anyone else, but if they weren’t they might post as much in a couple days or weeks as they might otherwise have in a whole year

Does commenting count as posting? I comment far more than I post.

I find posting is generally either advertising your life or complaining/angry. Most of my postings are goofy or science oriented. Stuff I’ve found interesting or funny.

I’m assuming this relates to personal social media (where the poster is the focus) rather than the lemmyesque content social media (where the content is the focus and the OP rarely matters)

Edit: not sure why I’m getting the negative reaction, it’s pretty well understood that seeking approval of stuff you have done/are in life, over stuff you’re sharing that is interesting, is going to be more negative emotionally when met with rejection.

Feel free to let me know if I’m off the mark

The same dopamine hits come from likes on a news article (or comment on news) as comes from likes on a personal post.

You cant tell me you dont think “cool!” when an article you post gets a good response.

Interesting! I didn’t see anything about dopamine in the article when I read it, so I didn’t make the link that the positive side would be meaningfully impactful.

See my reply to the other comment for my reasoning

Eh I see what you’re saying, but that’s not it, this is a pretty well discussed phenomenon at this point

Meta/twitter style social media is much more tied to the individual, it’s more psychologically impactful to someone if something intrinsic to themselves is criticised

Reddit/Lemmy style social media is kinda detached from the poster in most cases, it’s about the content. It’s much less psychologically impactful if people react negatively to something that’s nothing to do with you beyond being the messenger.
