Today I posted a picture of a stamp with an animal in it and they said the picture contained nudity and made me take it down, but I reported a photo of a guy with a fully visible swastika tattoo and they said that’s fine.

I’d like to start a Lemmy community with photos of stuff that they refuse to remove called FacebookSaysItsFine.

All my photos and everything are still up. I see other people blogging there too. I still get email notifications from there too.

Just go back to using Livejournal. It’s a fine platform honestly.

I gave it up because it’s basically a Russian government propaganda machine now. Did you listen to the Reply All episode about it? I too mailed a check for a permanent account but it stopped feeling safe in about 2015 so I shut down, nobody posts or reads there anyway that I know anymore. I miss it terribly. It was the absolute golden age of social media and I am closer to those friends than I am to anyone else.

Yeah I stopped using it around 2010 and that was not long after it became mostly Russian. I can’t read Russian so I had no idea what any of those accounts were posting about and I didn’t bother trying to translate the because it was like 2011 and translation online wasn’t that good back then.

I’ve never listened to Reply All. I assume its a podcast.

Anyway, I’m in the US and I don’t stick my head into Russian politics because I don’t think its my place to do so. It doesn’t concern me and I feel like its none of my business and I feel like the US really shouldn’t go sticking their nose in other countries business but of course our government is full of fucking nosey idiots. Always has been and seems to me our history is full of us sticking our nose where it doesn’t belong. I’m not a fan.

So if you have some kind of moral grudge against whatever those people are posting - I can’t agree or disagree. It’s good you stand up for what you believe however.

It’s still just a platform though and there is nothing wrong with you and your friends going there, starting your own community so you can all keep and touch and talk to each other. No one says you have to interact with the Russians there.

The good people left Facebook a long time ago. I would even argue before the place was taken over by boomers.

I think ultimately, it was the share functionality that ruined Facebook, because it was once the place where you keep up with your friends, but then the genuineness of it is gone after you realize they only see their friends as a captive audience to get likes and get a boost for their Farmvilles.

It’s a dehumanizing place, which is why it became a wasteland.

I would suggest the opposite. Perhaps a Facebook doesn’t allow this, community. Too much risk of attracting trolls and monsters.

That said. The FBI says that Facebook, Instagram, Twitter et al. They all contain a not insignificant amount of CSAM at any given point in time. The fact just never gets reported by press because they’re normalized platforms by the public. Only the fediverse gets that sort of negative attention in the press because it’s the disruptive outsider platform. When by both proportion and volume, almost all other platforms have a worse issue with awful content that regularly flies under the radar because they are big corporations.

'cause porn is made with consenting adults. CSAM isn’t porn. CR is typically what’s depicted in CSAM (assuming that R stands for rape), but there’s two (or more) separate though closely related crimes here. That and SA (sexual assault) covers a wider breadth of activities, which is good if a person wants to quibble over the term rape when regardless something horrific happened to a kid and videos/images of said horrific thing is now getting shared among pedophiles.

Will note I’ve only seen CSAM used when I started using Lemmy, so I’m not really sure when people started using the term over CP. I’m personally for it - it more accurately describes what it is, and while I haven’t seen this term in the wild SAM to describe video or images of non-consenual sex acts among adults is good too.

It’s not the same and you know it. I have the same issue with Instagram. Many of our interactions through the platform come from us reacting to each other’s content (posts, stories, comments). Without that you lose a lot of “spontaneous” interaction.

Question is: How much does spontaneous interaction contribute to your life.

For me I found, it’s not much more than a regular, short dopamine rush and lock-in in a certain bubble. Do I know a lot less about people? Sure. Do I miss something in my life? Hell no. That added peace is invaluable and a telephone call from time to time is much better.

It’s not a conspiracy, and it is present across all social media platforms. There is selective enforcement of rules and moderation and now many companies push ‘engaging’ content, which basically means pressing out and promoting ‘safe’ content that is easily agreeable or controversial to increase user time so more ads are seen.

On Reddit, it is very similar. Somebody can say something insane, but it is ‘just an opinion’ meanwhile you call them an idiot, and you get banned by admins. If you even suggest anything ‘extreme’ you are also getting site banned. It just turns everything into a hive-mind which is dominated by liberals. The fact anyone thinks it is a ‘left-wing’ platform shows how dumb people are. It’s very clear that it is made to drive engagement and show ads to maximise income. These social media companies aren’t interested in free speech or fairness. It actively harms genuine engagement because most people just won’t even post or comment if they know it is risking a ban or downvote train where they get shit on. It’s no surprise the platform is now infested with bots and reposts.

I’d like to start a Lemmy community with photos of stuff that they refuse to remove called FacebookSaysItsFine.

I get why you feel this way, but this feels a little superfluous. Like, making that community will never, ever change how Facebook does business, we’re not going to shame them into being better by cataloging the terrible shit they allow. In other words, all we’re doing is choosing to make a forum filled with the horrible, hate-filled posts that Facebook says are okay. I’m honestly more comfortable just leaving them on Facebook and not posting the same vile garbage here to make fun of it, because I don’t think it will change anything other than a history of hateful posts on Lemmy.

We can make fun of how much they suck without bringing their awfulness and putting it on display over here, especially when doing that isn’t gonna change a damn thing. Facebook has the “fuck you” money to ignore it.

Also, by definition such a community would contain a bunch of things we don’t want to see on Lemmy either. So probably better not to.

That’s a good point. It just makes me mad they get away with this.

I personally find it hard to do because I have all kinds of old Livejournal friends on there.

I’d argue we’re already fighting back by being here and choosing something like Lemmy over Facebook.

The more users they lose to competing sites that offer more community for the user, the more their influence will wane and eventually they’ll become like MySpace and it honestly won’t matter anymore, because who the fuck uses MySpace? I honestly think Facebook is coming close to this because young people don’t want to use it anymore. It’s no longer “cool” and hasn’t been for a while. Sure they’ve got Instagram on lock, but they’ve been having a hard time competing with TikTok.

Facebook isn’t a foregone conclusion and, personal opinion of course, the best way to fight back is to simply take away their ability to track you by deleting your profile, visiting Facebook as little as possible, and using Facebook containers in your browser to keep them from being able to develop a shadow profile for you.

Reddit has lots of subreddits making fun of that kind of thing from Facebook as well, and it hasn’t changed how Facebook does anything. I don’t think pointing out how much they such and documenting it actually does anything to them, in the long run. Getting people to stop using their services is a bigger deal. Because people using their services is how they collect data, which they sell to make money. Hit em in the pocketbook, it’s the only way.

The problem with unlimited free speech is that it lets the worst people be free to be even worse yet. There is no such thing as ethical absolutism of any kind; it’s just extremism in a flashier suit, and extreme is by its very nature hostile because it can be used to justify literally anything. Especially by true believers.

Every few years someone gets the idea of creating an internet absolute free speech zone and a few months later figures out why it is a terrible idea. It is never people from vicious dictatorships sharing messages about freedom. It is always child porn, scams, spam, and Nazis plotting terrorist attacks.

A few years ago, someone my daughter knew from school was posting pictures of her cuts from self harm on Instagram. I reported it to instagram but they didn’t do anything about it.

It isn’t the same, even if it pedantically has the same label. I have zero clue who you are or who you might be trying to be. You are two sentences at this moment to me.

There’s no “pedantically” about it. You said you quit all the “Social” media a few years back, yet, here you are, posting and participating in social media. Be as flippant as you want about it, you’re either and idiot or a liar. If we apply Hanlon’s Razor here, I think we’ll all come to the same conclusion.

Where did I say I quit all the Social media a few years back? Please show me the exact comment.

you’re either and idiot or a liar.

Remember that you said this about me while you search thought my comment history for me saying that I quit social media a few years back.

I didn’t “Search” through anything. You literally said it in the comment thread we are in.

Edit. My bad, I mistook you for someone else. I apologize.

if you don’t think things like reddit and lemmy are social media, you’re beyond the comprehension and intelligence to even attempt to explain to. so yea. i also apologized for making a mistake. something rarely seen in “forums” or social media. sooo fuck off?

Ugh. I would love to stop using it but I need it for school. My college regularly posts information on Facebook groups instead of its own websites and I need Messenger for communication/group work in college.

That’s impossible to avoid actually. That’s how all colleges in my country work and generally that’s how life works. Facebook is massive here and Messenger is the most popular instant messaging app among the youth.

I’m in South East Asia (won’t reveal more for privacy reasons). Facebook is really popular here.

Not the person you’re talking to but I’m in the UK and went back to uni as an adult in 2018. Literally had to install Messenger because it was the only thing the kids used, for the entire duration of our degree. Completely blew my mind!
