Summary

President Biden announced student loan forgiveness for 150,000 additional borrowers, raising the total to over 5 million under his administration.

The latest beneficiaries include borrowers defrauded by schools, individuals with disabilities, and public service workers.

Biden emphasized his focus on expanding pre-existing forgiveness programs after his broad plan was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2023.

Conservatives and Trump argue the efforts overstep executive authority and unfairly shift costs.

Biden called the initiative a fulfillment of his promise to reduce financial barriers to education.

The 150,000 new beneficiaries announced Monday include more than 80,000 borrowers who were cheated or defrauded by their schools, over 60,000 borrowers with total and permanent disabilities, and more than 6,000 public service workers, Biden said in the release.

So it was all thru existing programs and Biden did nothing to make it happen?

Literally what he did in the next paragraph:

The Biden administration has focused on revising and expanding federal student loan forgiveness programs that existed before Biden took office. That approach allowed the administration to expand loan forgiveness options despite its failure to implement new federal forgiveness programs after the Supreme Court struck-down Biden’s initial plan in 2023.

focused on revising and expanding federal student loan forgiveness programs

        But no specifics…

If your school defrauded you, you don’t have to pay.

        That’s been a thing since 2015.

The second is if you have permanent disabilities.

        That went into effect 2013.

The last is PSLF which has also been around much longer than Biden.

Biden has done nothing to expand who is applicable for any of those things.

So why are people clapping for him?

You’re right, these are all existing programs that Biden’s following. I don’t think he deserves a round of applause for doing the bare minimum, but we know that Trump will either try to skirt around these programs or remove them completely.

This will likely be the last bit of loan forgiveness we see for the next 4 years.

The only MAGAs in this thread are the “Blue MAGAs” trying to gaslight us into thinking that merely administering the existing law is some heroic act and not a goddamn baseline expectation.

And that’s saying a lot, because I fucking hate the “Blue MAGA” accusations. I’ve always considered it dishonest ‘both-sides’-ism, not a real thing.

But nope! This thread, right now, has finally proven to me that it is indeed real. You have managed to sink to that level. So congratulations, I guess, for extinguishing the last shred of faith I had in liberals. That’s what your bad faith bullshit has accomplished. I hope you’re happy.

Weird, dishonest fanboyism for liberal politicians.

            What sense does that make?

I’m the one pointing out that pretending these numbers have anything to do with the president now is still true when trump takes over.

Like, do you honestly think that anyone not throwing logic out the window to applaud Biden supports trump…

That’s literally what trump supporters do.

Where have you ever seen them use logic to back up a criticism of Biden?

These programs exist but bureaucratic hurdles prevented people from actually having their loans forgiven.

Biden bypassed all that and just forgave the loans. This is also what he did for the other 5 million loans. Sure you COULD argue he did nothing, but if you ask those 5 MILLION people who were paying loans that should have been forgiven but weren’t until Biden’s executive orders I think they’ll say something different.

I reject this rhetoric that makes him look like a hero “bypassing” hurdles in order to… do the bare minimum required of our government by law. I refuse to let my standards stoop that low.

Biden didn’t to jack shit except to undo Betsy DeVos’s sabotage and administer the program in good faith. That’s not heroic; that’s the basic expectation of the job. It only looks heroic in comparison to the previous active sabotage.

I would add, he made a big deal about loan forgiveness for people who would go on to work in underpriveleged communities, which was always a thing.

Really the only new program he implemented which wasn’t immediately overturned by the courts was forgiveness for people who a) borrowed $12,000 or less and b) hadn’t missed a loan payment for 10 years.

Which they CLAIM is a whole bunch of people, but nobody stops to ask “Hey, if you borrowed $12,000 or less and haven’t missed a payment in 10 years, how much is actually outstanding on that loan?” Or better “What degree costs $12,000 or less?”

A half hearted effort doesn’t mean we should applaud him for things that would have happened regardless of who is President.

When these numbers keep going, are you going to talk about how great trump is? Or will you magically agree with me because the president changed?

Cuz buddy, it won’t take long until these exact numbers continue under trump.

I dunno, if Trump 2 treats student loans, and especially the Borrower Defense Loan Discharge program the way the Trump 1 administration did - blocking various ‘streamlining’ procedures, imposing a statute of limitations, and using the Secretary of Education’s discretionary powers to block, delay, and minimize repayments, then it will be a long time before they rack up Biden numbers.

To be clear, my point is due to the huge amount of student loan debt, neither Biden or trump did enough, and neither would do more in the next four years regardless of if Biden had run and won like he thinks he would have.

These are performative gestures that don’t really accomplish anything.

Clapping when your team does it actively hurts everyone because then they stop, they got what they wanted, the PR boost.

So while Biden did performative meaningless shit, so did trump.

Don’t clap for stuff like this either.

Some welcome news today for disabled veterans with student loan debt - President Trump announced an executive order forgiving all federal student loan debt for vets who are permanently and totally disabled.

            https://www.npr.org/2019/08/21/753213306/trump-signs-executive-order-forgiving-all-federal-student-loan-debt-for-disabled

            Or this

Under Trump’s proposed plan, if you are a student loan borrower, your monthly student loan payments would be capped at 12.5% of your income. After 15 years of monthly payments, your remaining student loan debt would be forgiven.

So. What you’re saying is: you have 100% of all the information Biden has, and based on his actions, you conclude that he’s not doing enough with all that information you both have.

Okay, release that information. Show your work.

These numbers are normal and happening naturally…

Unless these programs that existed before trump are suddenly stopped when he didmt stop them last time, they will continue to happen.

If this sounds like a lot of people, you’re missing the scope of how many people have student loans in America, or that the number continues to increase.

More people with loans means more forgiveness. It’s like caring about popular vote totals from prior elections compared to a current one, population keeps going up so every other number does too.

He did stop them last time, though. Or rather, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos did. I mean, obviously they didn’t officially cancel the program/change the policy, but they definitely did do everything they could to illegally obstruct the process.

That still doesn’t mean Biden deserves to be fellated for (checks notes) merely ceasing to obstruct, though.

I’m getting really tired of neoliberals cheering for basic mediocrity and acting like it’s murder to criticize Biden. They’re just an extension of the Democratic Party that is entirely unwilling to address the fact that simply not doing bad things doesn’t make you good.

These are not accomplishments. This is not the promise that got me to vote for Biden despite not believing he would be a good president, nor that his primary run was above board. I want a president that actually works to better the lives of the people.

And while we’re at it, I’d like a fair primary without DNC bullshit.

You remember a couple years ago when a WB board member said the reason they bought CNN was to make it more like Faux News to change people’s minds?

These are those people that kept watching CNN and that is why they’re acting like trump supporters.

The wealthy want voters with zero standards except the left by a name. And they’ve bought almost every media outlet to get those types of voters in both parties.

And this thread has all their usual rhetoric, complete with confident assumptions that anyone criticizing their king must be a “MAGAt.” It’s just so utterly incomprehensible to them that anyone can exist to their left, even though the US has no left wing parties.
