    To be honest, I think the Amish might be on to something. If we could create a sect that stopped at '90s tech, I’d be tempted to convert.

      Cory Doctorow explained in one of his articles that the Amish don’t avoid technology indiscriminately, they weigh the harm against the use. His example was that it’s bad when electronic communication replaces face-to-face contact, but it’s no good either if you can’t call a vet when your cow falls ill.

        Amish communities can have phones if they vote for it amongst themselves. The one I saw was a community landline. They had just one in a little shed along the driveway.

          Yeah, my understanding is that typically a shopkeeper or someone like that might have an old-style cell dumbphone, without the Facebooks and stuff.
