      It’s time [to] explain the meaning of “Hurd”. “Hurd” stands for “Hird of Unix-Replacing Daemons”. And, then, “Hird” stands for “Hurd of Interfaces Representing Depth”. We have here, to my knowledge, the first software to be named by a pair of mutually recursive acronyms.

    I don’t wanna be that guy but… Linux is a kernel and Hurd is an operating system, so technically neither of them run by default

      Hurd isn’t an operating system tho. It’s a bunch of microkernel servers for GNU Mach microkernel.

      Hurd is the Kernel part of the GNU. Linux is the kernel that replaces the kernel part of GNU because Hurd is not yet ready for 64 bit arch.
