I hate this mainly due to the number of penises per button. The playstation buttons are actually numbered based on the number of lines associated with the symbol (circle = 1, cross = 2, etc). This flys directly into the face of that. The circle button needs to have 1 dick where the tip curves and touches the balls, and the triangle needs to have 3 dicks. 0/10

Interesting observation, but maybe it is just a coincidence since I am not aware these numbers appearing anywhere? Found this reddit thread that talks about same thing.

Here’s an interview with controller′s designer that explains the meaning behind symbols. I think number theory is just a coincidence since I think it would be mentioned in this interview as well.

Other game companies at the time assigned alphabet letters or colors to the buttons. We wanted something simple to remember, which is why we went with icons or symbols, and I came up with the triangle-circle-X-square combination immediately afterward. I gave each symbol a meaning and a color. The triangle refers to viewpoint; I had it represent one’s head or direction and made it green. Square refers to a piece of paper; I had it represent menus or documents and made it pink. The circle and X represent ‘yes’ or ‘no’ decision-making and I made them red and blue respectively. People thought those colors were mixed up, and I had to reinforce to management that that’s what I wanted.

Maybe I’m just too literal, but I have no idea what to make of the “no one:” part of these memes. Every time I see it, I feel like the joke works just as well without it.

Nobody can’t have no dialogue, people!

Yup, it’s completely pointless. It’s supposed to mean that no one was asking for or about something, but then the correct way to put it would be “Everyone:” If no one is saying nothing, then everyone is saying something.

Alright, I’m officially filing a motion with the greater Internet court to replace “no one:” with “nobody asked, but…”

That would work, but even better would be not having anything there at all. It never changes anything.

Part of those kinds of jokes are the ridiculousness aspect, it’s just another way to make it more ridiculous imo. Kinda like OKBR humor basically.

I remember some early iterations makes sense but 99% of them don’t and are extremely unnecessary, even detrimental to the meme.

And I’ve just seen they expended the game a lot with various different dick sports.

Aren’t the PS symbols copyrighted/branded? I read somewhere that there’s some IP involved, so you can’t use the standard symbols.

The specific design of the shapes is trademarked, not copyright. Drawing circles and squares is fine. Using those specific shapes in a game meant for use with a Playstation controller falls under fair use. Otherwise using them in any way that it would seem like Sony would be involved, not so much.

IANAL, but this describes it well enough.

Branding is product specific. I wouldn’t be surprised if nobody can put a pink square and red circle on their controller due to trademark, but that doesn’t mean Sony owns red circles and pink squares. It means they have reserved the right to exclusively have those buttons on their controllers as it’s part of their branding. If other people put those buttons on their controllers it could be mistaken for a Sony controller. If you want to put a pink square and red circle on another product Sony doesn’t sell then you’re probably fine.

You’re right. Sony sued (or sent a C&D letter, don’t remember exactly) dbrand when they made PS5 housing plates with the triangle, square… Etc.

I think the point is they copyrighted these symbols as part of their branding, just like their logo, so in the context of games and game controllers

They all have their symbols copyrighted or trademarked I think, so they can’t just use standard button orientations. The punks.

It’s not perfect, but much better than going to Shitter. Some people apparently find Mastodon obscure or confusing and switched to Bluesky instead. Supposedly it’s more friendly towards new users. I just hope that bridgy-fed improves and becomes more common in the future, so we can follow Bluesky accounts from the Fediverse and vice-versa.
