It’s not children censoring things. It’s people obfuscating words that may get flagged and have their post removed.

These days software can scan images and videos and not just text, for violations of whatever rules they have.

Like on most of the mainstream platforms just the audible mention of suicide gets you flagged. So people have adopted ways to avoid detection like saying unalive instead of suicide.

This censoring of the word death is not for ethical reasons as you are insinuating.

Basically don’t let it piss you off. Terrible hill to die on.

I hate it too, but it is to prevent their post from getting flagged and/or removed. It’s a new form of censorship that came into being from advertisers who don’t want their products associated with certain topics. The advertisers then threaten to stop advertising on the platform which caused the platform to automate cracking down on any topic that isn’t considered advertiser friendly, regardless of how innocent the word’s use is.

When this happens “d֎ath” is inevitable.

Hey, did you know your profile is set to appear as a bot and as a result many may be filtering your posts and comments? You can change this in your Lemmy profile settings.

As many have sort of pointed out, it’s not the children. The censorship comes from grown ups running companies. The result is people who just want to speak freely needing to speak slightly differently.

Any website that censors the word “death” should be boycotted

Cute. But no, I’m commenting to explicitly point out that the censorship is still there but coming from the platforms run by companies.

2023 is that Oceangate idiot who went down in an oil barrel and took his terrified son and a bunch of businessmen down with him and it quickly imploded, killing all of them.

How are there still so many deaths 10 years before and after the Titanic sank?

    • @Viking_Hippie

My guess is that, due to less effective methods of record keeping, not everyone was immediately identified and declared dead.

As for why people died BEFORE boarding the Titanic but still count, I’m afraid that I don’t have any non-gruesome theories 🤷

I despise that as an old man having serious conversations with younger people, they will say words like “unalive” without even the knowledge or hint of an idea that it’s a weird thing to say, because they heard their parents say it, they saw the memes their parents made that say “unalive” and other substitutes for serious words.

I can see from here the shape of my disconnect from the next generations, despite all I have done in my life to stay up with current trends, language and ideas, this is the area that leaves me behind, and it’s entirely a product of capitalism.

It’s even worse than that. Terms like unalive are a product of social media algorithms. There are certain terms that the algorithms don’t like and social media influencers come up with alternative words to conform to the algorithm. Children don’t understand that these terms are meant to be substitutes for other words when making social media content so say them in day to day life.

So… AI is changing our language.

I have had a theory for a long time that this just makes me believe it more. My theory is that so much viral shit we see online is not organic. It’s all cooked up by rooms full of twenty something ad agencies and how do you measure effect on viral campaigns? You need a way to search reach and what better way than making up dumb new words that nobody ever uses so you can query it later on. Watch in an election year and count all the new words used and ask if they’re vague or if they’re words that can be used to measure reach

OH I GOT IT! The submarine that imploded was heading for the Titanic.

Leaving the explanation here because I was so frustrated 38 comments in nobody even made a joke that was helpful for explaining the meme.

no actually it was because in 2023 there was another Titanic that was built in memorial to the original but they only sent 5 people on it that time. it met the same fate on its maiden voyage. megalodon attack.
