So I look in the modlog from time to time. There’s been some actions I’ve seen that I don’t agree with, but there is no way to see the context, so I’ve never spoke up. But today I saw something that concerned me. I’m just going to copy/paste the modlog so you see what I see.

I don’t know who this guy is, or who the mod is, but essentially this guy is getting banned for being liberal.

Or am I misreading the situation???

Each instance gets to be its own fiefdom to an extent. If you’re shitty enough to a wide enough audience or you tolerate shitty users you might be defederated, but for the most part as a mod you get to decide the rules for your server.

In this particular instance the mod decided to ban someone for whatever reason, maybe it was being a lib, maybe they were annoying a mod, it doesn’t really matter.

The cool thing is that you can avoid the instance if you want, or block it so you don’t have to see anything from it, or start your own instance with blackjack… And hookers. The options are unlimited.

So you’re saying there’s no holding mods accountable for their actions. We can only leave.

Seems like thats counter intuitive to growing Lemmy.

Just leave the instance, not the fed. It can be seen to help grow it. You’re free to start your own instance and allow/disallow anyone for any reason. Remember that there isn’t 1 Lemmy. It’s not like reddit where there’s one site. It’s more like a whole shitton of very similar sites that overlap. So one rogue mod is messing up a News, just ban that instance and find another one.

It’s counterintuitive to growing an instance maybe.

The whole idea is that there is no centralization.

        It (the fediverse) is de-centralized.

The point is that there’s no one entity in charge.

You don’t have to leave the fediverse because you don’t like an instance. You’re free to start your own communities and/or instances anywhere else, no one is obligated to tolerate anyone and everyone in their space.

I banned them for reporting a post about killing nazis for being against site rules (it’s not) and for the offending post “glorifying violence”. I don’t need that neolib shit on this instance. I did not know it was going to list every community on this instance they’re now banned from in the modlog.

Had the user reported stuff like that before and been told specifically that it wasn’t rule-breaking? Jumping straight to banning someone who may have genuinely thought they were being helpful seems like an unfair extreme response.

You’re wanting to fix someone’s personal instance? They’ve stated their reasoning within this post.

Block the community or instance and forget about it, only patronize instances with moderation you agree with and leave the bad ones to wither

Centralization. Or NOSTR. Think about it, federation is just millions of tyrant admins and mods and reddit is just one.

You can join our Instance we’re pretty chill. You can look at our modlog too. We rarely ban and remove stuff. I understand you might not be interested and that’s ok.
