watch it be a multiverse version of Tony Stark.

edit: also if this is legit I am disappointed they didn’t long-tease the reveal in movies or post credit scenes. this seems very un-marvel, maybe out of desperation. they straight up blew what could have been the biggest and most shocking reveal in history.

edit 2: also, how long until “I am Dr Doom!”

Tony made Ultron as the ultimate defense around the world. I could see the idea going a slightly different way and that Tony being a little more ambitious/evil, next thing you know he’s Doom.

I get that I’m in the minority, but I think this is going to not be related to Iron Man at all.

Rdj has range. And Doom wears a mask. I think he decided he was too old to keep playing Tony and wanted to retire the character on a high note, but the movies are fun to make and make him a mint, so when they offered a recast he went for it. But I don’t think he’d want to screw with the completed story for Tony Stark’s character.

I think RDJ is just going to play Doom, and he’ll do a good enough job that no one is going to confuse the characters. Based on his acting choices, that’s my guess.

That just sounds super confusing. I know Marvel has done that with some smaller characters, but Tony Stark is the closest thing the MCU has/had to a main character. If it’s not an alternate Ironman it’ll just confuse audiences.

I don’t think it’d be confusing if they either never show his face, or only show his face as heavily disfigured.

I did worry about his voice though, as RDJ has a pretty distinct accent and way of speaking, but then I reasoned that he’s a good enough actor to put on an accent, and that Latveria, being a fictional country, could justify a strange accent and mask his speech, no pun intended.

Yeah. To add to this: my husband was just reflecting on how dismayed Iron Man fans were when he was cast as Tony Stark in 2007. The consensus on forums like this was that he was a skinny, nebbish weirdo with a nasally voice who was probably too unreliable due to addiction issues to appear consistently in a franchise. And yet here we are.

People forget this: he’s an actual actor! He’s not just that one voice and face!

I think he’s genuinely done and satisfied with Tony Stark as a character, but he had a lot of fun being in Marvel movies, so he’s starting over. Yes: he was the main character. And I think he’d like to go on being a main character, but wants a new experience and the opportunity to play the ultimate villain. And when he gets in character, I don’t think anyone is going to be confused.

Yeah, make the little cockfart suffer, I say!

EDIT: confession time - I squirm uncomfortably in the latest movies whenever Peter makes a stupid and completely preventable mistake, and the writers make him do it over and over again, like a narrative crutch to advance the plot, to the point that I find it irritating, because Peter seems to be learning nothing along the way.
The Tobey Maguire ones did it best, I feel, kept a balance between honest mistakes of inexperience and us feeling sympathy for him.

Have you read the comics? If not - Peter Parker is constantly traumatized by shit going horribly wrong or failing to account for something frequently. I’d say it’s a running gag but Stan Lee wanted a super hero people could connect with at a human level.

That seems like something they should’ve waited to reveal during the movie, like had some misdirection about RDJ just being in it for a flashback or a recorded video, just downplay it and make it seem small. Then bust the revelation out midway through the movie.

I found this post browsing All. I have had significant superhero fatigue right after infinity war part 2, after a whole decade of mild disbelief at how huge these once-niche characters have become.

This headline definitely grabbed my attention, and as you said, the fact that they’re spoiling that he’s going to play Doom is why I checked this thread.

        revealing them both

Even mentioning them as separate things wouldn’t have made me look. Their marketing machine is definitely working overtime to get the attention of people burned out on superhero movies.

I’m not really burned out on superhero movies per se, I got burned out on Disney’s shitty writing. It’s just endemic to everything they do anymore, whether it’s Marvel or Star Wars or anything. Kid movies usually get a pass cause they’re whatever, but it’s almost insulting to watch media that makes the barest attempts at telling a coherent story. Maybe <10% of what they put out is “quality”, the rest just ends up being absolute drivel. I just got tired of getting mad at how bad the writing was while watching their stuff.

It’s almost formulaic at times, they just sort of move from one plot point to another with the barest of logic. You can see characters doing dumb things solely in order to move the plot forward to the next scene. I’m not expecting Shakespeare, but it’s almost like Disney’s scripts are actually written by an AI, maybe She-Hulk wasn’t that far off the mark.

I don’t like it. Seems weird. An article I read said that he would NOT be playing a multiverse version of Doom, but actually Victor Von Doom.

Now, based on that I have two thoughts:

    1. He was originally a Tony Stark multiverse version but became corrupted and no longer thinks of himself as Tony so he IS Victor Von Doom (like an identity shift).

    2. He has Tony Stark’s face and will be revealed in a mask off moment. However, the twist is that it’s actually a Doombot and Tony’s face is used to mess with the Avengers. Maybe Doombots can have any face he chooses?

      I think there’s a more simply theory:

      1. He never takes off the mask, and we never see his face.

I’m kind of weirdly excited because I’ve been wanting him to come back as Doctor Doom for awhile now but didn’t think it would actually happen.

There’s just so much room for character drama with our avengers having to make sense of a villainous version of their hero. Also room to play with the dichotomy of stark being a man of science and Doom more into magic.

Is there a reason you wanted RDJ for Doctor Doom? I haven’t read the comics so I’m unfamiliar but I would have expected him not even to be in the conversation. Is there some kind of cannon connection between stark and him? I always thought his link was to the Fantastic Four primarily.

I thought the same thing, except this is like a reverse-Infamous plot where (presumably) Tony is Doom rather than Doom is Ironman.

MCU doesn’t really have a ‘proper’ Reed Richards, so the alternate universe Evil Reed from Secret Wars couldn’t work that way. The only brains of the MCU that could fill that role in that plot would be either Stark or Bannon, and the latter is a) still alive and b) already his own foil and his genius isn’t really played in the same way anyway. B-list alternative would be Hank Pym but he’s not been central to the MCU in anything like the same way as the other two.

Honestly I think it might work pretty well story-wise. Though actual reason is just… well, money. And the course correction aspect previously mentioned in these comments.

Well rest assured if you have a critical complaint about the MCU you can say it here. You have to say more than “I don’t like this” but if it’s a thought out idea you don’t say it. (And there is plenty to criticize)
