This isn’t even satire. I am willing to bet if my conservative coworkers even hear about it, they’ll basically say this. Or make some comparison to Venezuela if they are slightly more aware than just parroting Fox.

I feel like I should write a report on satirical news sources becoming accurate. I’d be willing to bet that they are - completely by accident - more factual than, say, the Daily Mail or Fox News.

It’s always been this way, somewhat. The onion predicted the rise of Trump way back in 2012 with "After Obama Victory, Shrieking White-Hot Sphere Of Pure Rage Early GOP Front-Runner For 2016” (apologies for the HuffPost link, the onion just revamped their website and this article now gives a 404 error).

Sources say the screaming orb might be the only potential candidate that would tap into Republicans’ deep-seated, seething fury after this election.

And of course when Bush was inaugurated they predicted his increase in the national deficit and starting wars in the Middle East with Bush: ‘Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over’

there’s something to be said about satire and it’s seeming fundamental relation to real life, is it the satire that creates the prediction? Or is the satire just following the current trends very closely. Maybe it’s the other way around.

I’m a big fan of an author who wrote a modern day sci-fi/cosmic horror series that’s a thinly veiled allegory where monsters from beyond the universe are stand ins for anthropomorphic climate change. He ended up having to scrap his last book (currently being rewritten) because the way he was going to wrap up the series was going to be a worldwide plague that made people stupider.

          Then covid happened.

i learned recently, i think it was sherlock holmes? I’m not a literary scholar dont quote me, was literally just a book about how mormons suck and are bad and stinky. But actually it’s a novel now.

I wouldn’t be surprised to learn if that kind of thing happened more often than we thought about.

He ended up having to scrap his last book (currently being rewritten) because the way he was going to wrap up the series was going to be a worldwide plague that made people stupider.

should’ve published it anyway, i think that would’ve been funny.

Most conservatives are not conservative simply because they’re stupid or racist. They’re psychological warfare victims of a propaganda machine designed to deflect the problems of society at “others”, instead of the oligarchs who corrupt the government, and the system that enables it.

That’s why Bernie was such a threat. His politics are the objectively best approach for 99% of people, regardless of political party, and he was able to cut through the noise to win them over, if given the chance. Most conservatives agree with socialist policies when you frame them as conservative policies.

Its a spectrum of stupid on one end and evil on the other. They’re either suckered into supporting evil through some dumbass cause like protecting bathrooms; smart enough to see the difference but too evil to care; or somewhere in between. I’m not aware of any exceptions.

the inherent irony here is that conservatives like the communism when trump does it, but not when biden/harris does it.

They were perfectly fine with trumps i think unilateral tariffs on basically all imports. But biden introduces a 100% tariff on chinese EVs and i immediately see cons talking about how chinese EVs are cheaper.

Also, i don’t know why any of them genuinely believe that the president has any control over the economy, it’s such a stupid concept, it can disproved with one question. Why has the economy EVER struggled if the president controls it?

The alt right/populists turned politics basically into a game of us vs them where you associate with “your” party like you would with a sports team. If you say something against “their” party, they take it personally just like saying something bad about their favourite sports team. If “their” party screws up they are way more lenient, like they would be if their favourite does a foul. They win and lose with “their” party and make their personal success dependent on it. That might not be rational but it’s normal behaviour for human to associate with groups like that. It just shouldn’t happen with politicians and political parties.

yeah its pretty much something of this sort. The human psychology is an interesting one, but what’s even more interesting is somehow preventing this sort of behavior from cropping up within the party because this is where fascism breeds. And if you let it fester for too long, you get really bad shit.

I know these types. Grocery prices supposedly quadrupled a year or few back. Having experienced quite a bit of inflation myself but knowing quite well that my grocery bill wasn’t even double pre-Covid era prices, I inquired further. The only example at the time of anything that had even remotely quadrupled in price was eggs. And that was a temporary thing at the time blamed on bird flu but later also revealed to be also due to corporate greed.

Trying to ride a train, and the people who should be exiting haven’t stood up from their seats yet, but still expect you to make way for them exiting the train as you’re trying to board?
