Ah, US… where even running away from a fire is dependent of having money.

Okay, full disclosure, if I run (I’m a few blocks east of the Mandatory Evacuation Zone but it’s blowing the other way) it’s going to be to a hotel, but there is free shelter available.

But CalFire has maps and LAFD has been pinging me all day with updates that also have maps.

      All free.

KCAL9 has dropped all their regular programs to run reports from the field, and I don’t think I’ve seen a single commercial.

The post is bullshit, or he deliberately chose payola sites.

After a second take, I don’t know which thought is worse: that they intentionally added the paywall to the pages, or that they just used the same template without even considering the paywall…

What the fuck are we doing…

Don’t know if it’s because I looked up the claim on that tweet outside of the US or because I used DDG instead of Google but I searched “la fire evacuation map”, deliberately clicked on the first result (a Fox subsidiary site, mind you) and was able to get to this non-paywalled gov site through the first few paragraphs? https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2025/1/7/palisades-fire

Could be dishonest opportunistic propaganda from this guy, could be I somehow managed to avoid the paywall shite, don’t know.

Everyone that lives in California (and thus the evac zone) would know to check CalFire (ie, www.fire.ca.gov) for any wildfire maps before looking at any other source because it would be the most accurate and most up to date.

Wildfires are such a common thing (car off the side of the state/interstate hwy, brush fire set off by a homeless encampment in public land, massive forest fire, etc - all would be on CalFire; for a local building fire you would have to check local authorities). We all know if we see smoke to check CalFire to get the details and if it’s heading our way. It even shows things happening in Mexico and nearby states in case it’s heading towards us.

This, or someone completely unfamiliar with California
