As someone who has been enjoying Rings of Power, I’m sorry, I actually really enjoyed the almost empathetic portrayal of orcs that care for their children and want what’s best for their people. I really sympathized with Adar’s lieutenant guy, not smart enough to take care of himself, a born victim, really.

I know anything different or not explicitly laid out is disliked, but I find it entertaining in adding depth to the enemy.

My main issue with the LOTR books was how black and white they are, the good guys are just good and never do anything bad, and the bad guys are just bad and never do anything good.

You’re jumping into a story thousands of years late.

Like there’s a reason Melkor was bad, he was basically the stand in for Lucifer a fallen angel.

His forces are known for industry and huge numbers. So just like Lucifer (and before him Prometheus) he was bringing “knowledge” that had huge downsides and wildly regarded as a bad thing by existing society.

But there’s reasons why the people are “bad” and why people are “good”. Hobbit and LotR just skips over that stuff. Which is why Tolkien wrote almost as much material as appendixes for people who want that background.

It just wasn’t included in the main story

Yeah, I’ve read the Sillmarillion, Unfinished Tales and the History of Middle Earth. I just think it would be a bit more interesting if some characters were a bit more nuanced. Still love the books though.

And for you, Frodo Baggins, I give you a light severance deal, cutting our most beloved profits. May it be a light to you in dark places when all other lights go out as you can’t pay for electricity anymore.
