/me slaps Maven around a bit with a large trout
Never understood why mIRC had a builtin for that.
Most likely one of the programmers was a fan of Monty Python, or perhaps one of the other older references to being hit by a fish. It wasn’t the only action command, just a weird one that lives on.
Here’s an interesting dive into the idea of action commands and how they’ve evolved into things like emojis and netspeak common today.
It was a Monty Python reference and common IRC joke.
I would make bots that would just go around and slap random people with fish lol
I also wrote a contextual menu that was nothing but scripts for slapping the selected user with a wide variety of fish.
12 year old me was a fucking dork.
upvoted, but just can I point out: “FartsWithAnAccent” 100% describes an adult-year-old dork 😜🤪
Man that takes me back. Trout slapping was a huge thing on IRC in the 90’s. I never understood why.
Edit: Apparently from Monty Python. Of course.
Why wouldn’t it have
You’ve been hit by
You’ve been struck by
A smooth salmonid
I think “halibut” would work there.
This gives me flashbacks to IRC
In Team Fortress 2, the Scout can replace his default melee weapon (a baseball bat) with a “Holy Mackerel”, a fish wrapped in newspaper. While having similar stats, it announces in the kill feed every time the scout hits an enemy with it, and if he defeats that enemy it will show a “FISH KILL!” message.
Fun fact, this is from Wikipedia
10/10, would wack again
I am allergic to getting whacked. It hurts every time.
WHAT.
Nobody smacks OR whacks me with a wet trout. Nobody! Here’s what I say to you:
Hmph.
Somehow it was less perceptible than I had expected.
Moist
