Honestly, we probably should have done this sooner, but the second best time is now. Links to Twitter, X, or any other alternative such as Nitter, Xitter, etc are now banned.

Please report all twitter/X posts to the Mods for immediate removal.

The only exception we will allow will be screenshots in the event that the associated news cannot be sourced elsewhere.

The rules for this community will be amended to reflect this change in policy.

Edit: To answer “why?” I will paste below a copy of my reply to another comment:

The long-term reason is that the platform as a whole is becoming more and more (arguably already is) a safe haven for fascism, racism, xenophobia, anti-lgbtqia+, etc.

The acute reason is Elon giving Nazi salutes at the inauguration being the final straw. This community will not support Nazism or fascism in any way whatsoever.

Previously we showed a preference for links to Nitter or Xitter but it wasn’t a rule. Now we reject the platform in all of its incarnations and in any way that provides traffic and or reliance upon it.

If you can’t find it anywhere open. Take what’s in the tweet and post it to your mastodon and link that. It helps bring that information to others in the fediverse.

I’d love this rule to become popular on all the good instances

Thank you for your service, mods! 🫡 A lot of places online will bemoan the Nazi takeover of Twitter and then keep supporting them. You guys actually have the balls to do something. Thanks!

I like it. I left when it became serious that he was going to buy it. No regrets.

I hope other communities follow this lead.

Does it also include links to pbs.twimg.com (CDN where images are hosted) and similar connected-but-separate web services?

This is a great question. I am fairly confident that a post directly to those related web services has never occurred in this community. We don’t even really get too many X links either but there are many game announcements and rumors that occur on X which have been posted here. So I will say yes, but we will rely on the community to report these posts for inspection and subsequent removal. If it becomes an issue we will name the additional web services and make the rule more specific. If it becomes even more of an issue I will look at implementing an automod.

      Edit;

The ban is more about denying support of the platform in the form of preventing web traffic. So in the spirit of that, any X-affiliated domains fall under the ban.

I have thought to do this for a while as well in some forms of communities i’m a mod or admin. Sadly a lot companies announce something on X, for example nintendo in the last year about switch 2, so i haven’t done it yet. I probably have use in the past some links to source like that because i usually like to use the original source of a news. But i agree to refrain from using a plattform like X.

This is why we will still allow posts in the form of a screenshot. But we will not be supporting traffic to the site or reliance upon any 3rd party alternative site that does.

Luckily for us, PlayStation started an official Blue sky account. I am also a mod of Nintendo on lemmy.world. I am discussing with the mods there about implementing the same rule. The only difference is that I am the sole originator of this community, whereas c/Nintendo was originated by another mod (which is in another time zone so I am waiting for their input instead of moving forward unilaterally).

Breaking news, Elon Musk buys mastodon. Turns it into nazi site.

    I mean…he didn’t, but I feel like that’s where this is headed.

It’s impossible to buy mastodon. Worst he can do is what Meta did with Threads which is hosting an instance and not federate lol

Nah. He could buy every single individual instance to the point where even if new instances not under his control start new, the image in peoples minds is that mastodon is a nazi thing.

Once that gets established in societys minds, it doesn’t matter that he only owns 92% of it. It becomes “Mastodon. That nazi musk thing”.
