It’s worse than that. It’s less a maturing trust, more a post-death inheritance. He is eagerly awaiting the day of his Father’s death - his patient, present and loving father - so that he can take his power.
I was surprisingly old (about 10 or 11) before I understood on an emotional level that “everybody dies” meant that the people I cared about would die. Before that time, I could have logically reasoned that these people were a part of “everyone” but I still felt like they would live forever.
What I’m saying is that I think it’s realistic that Simba knew that if there was a new king then the old king was dead, but he never really thought about what that meant about his own life.
I won’t pretend that I know about the intricacy of lion monarchies, but it could be possible his father would have given him the crown before dying.

Well yes. That’s the whole point of the movie. Simba, instead of inheriting respect and power, has to earn the respect by overcoming difficulty and proving himself. As opposed to Scar who has gained power by underhanded tactics and fear.
So you have to have a scene where the protagonist looses what he thinks to be true only to come to the realisation that what they hold dearest is not materials or wealth but friendship and love. Jesus fucking Christ even as a child I understood this. It’s literally every single Disney movie apart from Fantasia. That shot is messed up.
You mean to tell me that the skilful diplomacy with hyenas and tenacity that underpinned Scar’s usurpation were less difficult and worthy of respect than ‘kid goes on a camping trip with some weirdos for a bit, comes back and is made king’?
Really, beyond the ‘divine right’, Scar showed many traits of being a much more able king.
Even his villain song was a banger.
I am looking at his character arc in a while new light now.
