Been a sync user since day 1 and I’m looking forward to continuing to support it.

I’ve been using an app called Summit for Lemmy, and it feels very RiF-esque. RiF was the only way I used Reddit, and it’s made the transition very easy. In fact, in some ways, I feel it’s done some quality of life stuff even better than RiF did, like color coding comment chains, which makes it easier to keep track of who’s responding to who.

I use Feeder, and most sites I’m interested in have RSS feeds discovered if I plug in just the URL of their front page. Other sites can be a bit more of a pain, bit you can often just add /RSS or /feeds to the URL and the readers will work it out.

It’s like having Reddit back, this is amazing. 🙏

For as long as I can remember Reddit and Sync have been one and the same. I never used Reddit website or app, only ever used Sync to browse Reddit hosted content. I used it a lot. I’ve missed it a lot.

Between the Lemmy platform and Sync client, to all intents and purposes what Reddit was has been fully restored/migrated.

I know it’s early days, but I did not expect to see anything like this so soon and it gives me hope that Lemmy can grow and thrive into the network of people that always made Reddit what it was. Everything that’s needed is there - early, a little rough around the edges, but there. And being improved constantly.

    Hallelujah!

Being invitation only probably hasn’t helped spread the word out, and when I’ve seen it brought up, the strict moderation has brought out complaints.

Not attacking the platform for those things, their house, their rules, but I could see where that keeps them more under the radar.

It was a community built by a former Reddit backend developer, Deimos. He also built the subredditsimulator subs and automoderator, and is looking to purposefully cultivate an online community that avoids some of the common pitfalls, mainly:

          • Gravitating over time towards low-effort, lowest common denominator clickbait.
          • A culture of lawful-evil trolls who “follow the rules” but are ultimately assholes who ruin the vibe.

Personally I love what he’s done with the place. It’s small, but it’s big enough and I find that the quality of comments is far better than what you might find in most corners of the internet. I’ve also got a few invites if anyone wants to check it out.

Also the Tildes app is astoundingly good for what the developer is calling an “alpha”.

I see, I myself am not really against the idea of strict moderation. So many times, on many sites where I had some sort of moderation powers, I’ve always wanted to just fucking ban people who tip toe around breaking the rules or being assholes, but not quite breaking the barrier.

As long as the masses don’t all flock to just one server, the next time reddit fucks up it’ll be a much softer place to land. The only problem is the niche communities and they’re survivability when transferring over.

This really does feel like the early days of reddit. Where small, niche communities have to just keep plugging along until they hit a self-sustaining number of active users, and I didn’t realize how much I missed that till I came here.

Good, honestly. I personally could do without the type of person to write something off as bad on a single individual interaction with something that has a legitimate reason to not operate 100% at perfect level. It’s childish and I would rather those people stay on reddit and ruin THAT place

Yep, but I’m willing to bet that the dev negotiated something behind the scenes with Reddit to get extra time. If not, he’s probably racking up some serious API costs as Relay is one of the few remaining third-party apps that works without any modifications.

Why would reddit be lenient? Reddit doesn’t want 3rd party money. if they did they would have put out decent rates that 3rd party apps could actually support and would have generated revenue from all the apps. Their goal was to kill them all and they will. The number of people willing to pay $10-12/mo for a reddit 3rd party client that doesn’t allow NSFW posts is going to be tiny.

Either people didn’t care, and they’re the people Reddit really wants them to be, happy with any greedy corporate decision - or they did care and gave up. Not saying what we’re doing is all that high and mighty, it is just social media after all, but on that note it’s just social media. If you aren’t willing to stick to your morals with these small things then what does that say about you and the big things?

I think there’s still 2 broad categories of people who would drop Reddit in a heartbeat, depending on the circumstances.

Those who are stuck to Reddit because that’s where their community exists, and those who just haven’t been able to get over the threshold of understanding how a federated social media ecosystem works and the onboarding process.

The second category can be solved by making it simple enough for your average tech illiterate user to join a server/Lemmy as a whole, and I think the first just needs a large enough impetus to make a move - once communities hit a certain size, they’ll naturally attract more people.

I know for me, I joined Twitter despite not liking the platform because like 90% of the artists I followed on Tumblr left to go there during mass “female-presenting nipples” exodus. If it hadn’t been for those communities migrating, I never would’ve left. And when I left Twitter when the Muskrat bought it (and later left Reddit), I lost all those communities I joined for in the first place. Many of those artists are either on Twitter or Instagram, and that’s it - and I sure as hell want nothing to do with either platform; and the people from those Reddit communities have scattered to the winds or are still there.

One thing I don’t get though for those who are not happy with reddit but continue to use it is why they continue to keep actively participating.

Reddit and Twitter make it easy for people to not need accounts and provide either direct or indirect rss support, and reddit especially makes it easy to lurk on communities without an account through multisubreddit links for a customized feed without needing instances like nitter.

So sense I get is those who keep actively participating and contributing to reddit instead of going accountless and making steps to reduce their footprint there are ones who never were going to leave. And really was just a case of virtue signaling during the height of the protests.

As with many things in life, there’s no one simple reason for this, but I can think of a few factors that probably play into this.

One is that 50% of people are worse than the average person at any given thing, and in this case, I think the 2 relevant things would be tech literacy and concern about things like privacy. As Gen Z has entered the workforce, businesses have apparently begun to express concerns over the lack of tech literacy among applicants, especially when it comes to stuff like desktop software. Which makes sense since Gen Z has grown up in a world where basically everything is app based and on your phone. I’ve worked with highschool-age kids who never had a desktop/laptop in their house growing up. Add to this the average person’s concern on digital privacy and other concerns like the corporate greed that shut down the third party API access - which is basically nonexistent, since many people have trouble caring about something until it personally affects them - and it’s easy to imagine that your average Reddit user, especially lurkers, probably uses Reddit through the official app on their phone and doesn’t even know any other way they potentially could use Reddit. Most of them probably don’t even know what an adblocker is, let alone an RSS feed or something. I believe Reddit themselves said that the people who used third-party apps made up like a fraction of a percentage of the user base, with the next smallest group being those who used the website, and that the majority of people used the official app.

Then you have the force of habit. Habits, once entrenched, are hard to break. People like consistency and are often opposed to changes in their routine, especially ones that don’t have an obviously beneficial aspect to them and ones that will require some amount of effort to change. This is why doomscrolling social media in general is so difficult to stop. You can change platforms, but it takes a conscious effort to choose to stop entirely.

So your average Reddit lurker probably was upset about the change, but since it didn’t personally affect them, they grumbled about it and then went on with their doomscrolling.

Then, you get to the users who actively interact with Reddit, either through posting content or commenting. These are the kinds of people who aren’t going to just stop interacting with the subreddits they’re in and become lurkers, and they have even more reason to be stuck in the habit of using Reddit, because they have the emotional weight/connection to the communities they frequent. These are the kinds of people I was thinking of mainly for my previous comment, because they’re the most likely to stay despite being disgruntled with Reddit’s recent actions. It’s like they’re using Discord even though they think it sucks compared to a similar program because all their friends are on Discord, and all their friends are on Discord because they’re on Discord.

There are also the people who financially depend on social media. People like artists depend on platforms like Reddit because their livelihood depends on them putting their work in front of people’s eyeballs, so they can’t simply leave the big platforms. They might establish themselves on places like Lemmy, but they won’t be able to abandon Reddit simply because that’s the kind of place where the people are.

All of this to say, that basically the tipping point for the mass abandonment of Reddit will only happen when it personally negatively affects the majority of people, or when the better alternatives have a sufficient amount of users/content to make the effort of migrating seem worthwhile. Right now, Reddit just has too much gravity from being established for so long and having such a large userbase to keep your average person from wanting able to leave.

I use it sometimes, but with the instability of lemmy and being kicked from my login, not having saved logins is really annoying. I finally figured out that my keyboard app has been adding a space to the end of my username because it detects it as a saved word, and I don’t always remember this, so sometimes its a 2-3 attempt process just to log in and use the app.

This is one users 2 cents, I’m not really saying I dislike your app more than I am taking the opportunity to bitch to someone who will listen

I’ve really been enjoying it, although I have a problem with it. I have it set to hide seen posts, and when I try to see the top week posts, it says that there aren’t any. When I try it on wefwef, however, it shows posts. I’m assuming it’s something to do with how the post lookup works, where it will only retrieve a certain amount of posts to show and if I have seen them all, it won’t retrieve more? (wefwef takes a while to retrieve new posts, so I assume that’s what it’s doing)

While we’re all talking about Connect (and this could probably be a support post in the community but whatever), is anybody else having an issue that the app isn’t showing all comments? I can get it to show different ones by changing the sort but it doesn’t seem like there is a way to view all comments in a post. I don’t think it’s the result of a block or defederation.

No? It doesn’t feel like Reddit / Lemmy though either. I don’t have an account, but it feels really dead compared to Lemmy. I considered switching to Tildes, but the communities are too wide, like there isn’t a Futurama community, just a TV one, there isn’t a Retro games community, just a games one.

It makes sense when you have a small userbase, but I care about niche communities and Lemmy offers that, and some are even slightly alive here.

The user base was also too narrow. It felt like they wanted a specific kind of community, to a place open to just anyone.

Relay for me. But it looks like Sync finally added swipe gestures so I’ll just use that, since my favorite app isn’t getting a Lemmy port. Connect and Voyager are too clunky for daily use. Can’t wait until Sync launches.

(Edit: I just hope it shows downvote counts, comment previews, and has a tablet mode… Oh and doesn’t refresh the page every time I post something.)

Fellow Relay refugee. I welcome the swipe drawer even though it misses some actions. My biggest grudge is probably scaling. The font sizes are way too small and adjusting them in settings doesn’t seem to adjust them everywhere (e.g. this reply screen I’m looking at right now).

Overall I’m positive. I’ll probably duel-wield Sync and Jerboa and see which one brings the most pleasure.

Downloaded just now, looks great! But I don’t really enjoy the subscription model. Why not make one lifetime purchase of let’s say $20 or something? Monthly or yearly payments are a no for me. But paying even a little bit more for a lifetime would be working.

Exactly what I came here to say. I had purchased Sync Ultra (or whatever it was called) in the reddit app and was really happy with the experience. First thing I went to do upon installing the new one was go to purchase again and was really disappointed to see a monthly subscription and no one-time purchases option. Then I was even more disappointed to see ads in the feed. I mean, I get why the developer went this route, but it really sucks. I don’t want another running subscription to think about. I have enough of those as it is.

I might be mistaken, but I don’t think Sync Ultra is the same thing as the ad-free sync premium. Sync Ultra is a subscription because it adds functionality that requires cloud resources, not just removes ads.

It all depends on how you implement it. He describes the text from images as using machine learning, which implies using an external API to do that translation.

Storing cloud backups requires a server and storage, etc.

which implies using an external API to do that translation

It doesn’t. You can have local models.

Storing cloud backups requires a server and storage, etc.

Yes, it doesn’t have to be the author’s storage. Many, many apps implement it as adding the data to your Google Drive / Dropbox / whatever.

Alternatively, Sync had so many updates that paying for Ultra once so many years ago felt like I stole it. It’s like $17 a year? I could do that easily to support the dev.

I’d pay 20 a year if it were split 50/50 with the instance I select as my default… I mean the instances need to pay for bandwidth and hosting somehow. I get it, devs need to eat too, but pay it forward.

I think it’s definitely reasonable to expect that the app will continue to improve and there is no lifetime charge that would cover that.

The time is now to encourage and support development of the things you like and that also includes your favorite Lemmy instance itself.

I get that lifetime subscriptions are much more palatable to users but I don’t think it works if you consider that users will want lifetime support as well. So for maybe 20$ you’ll get theoretically years of even decennias of support, ignoring inflation, new bugs and security concerns, etc. It just doesn’t make sense and I wouldn’t expect it from a dev.

I don’t really expect support. I guess bugs get fixed along the way no matter if the user pays monthly, or once. I get the appeal of a subscription for devs, but for users it is not so nice.

Reddit is making the same mistake that 3DFX made against Nvidia and ATI back in the day with third party developers. Restricting 3rd party development was suicidal on reddit’s part.

Ultimately, people want choices, and I think if the average user see only one reddit app vs a literal wall of different Lemmy apps, they will be inclined to try at least one Lemmy app instead.

I disagree that the majority of people want choices, at least when it comes to social media. The vast majority of social media users want to be where the user base is at. For Lemmy to be the more attractive option, it either needs to have do similar numbers to it’s competitor or offer something very unique and useful that the others don’t.

And I say this as someone who has been much happier on Lemmy than I have been the last few years on Reddit.

Good thing Lemmy instances aren’t made from much smaller communities where everyone has more or less the same opinion…

Unless Lemmy would be considered more of an echo chamber for their respective communities versus a circlejerk?

I’d argue that individual instances aren’t all that important. Im on a smaller instances and hardly ever bump into people from my own instance.

When instances start defederating and closing some instances off, I could see, but even then those users would just make another account elsewhere to participate in the “all” of lemmy
