I don’t think it’s racist to not enjoy something you’re unfamiliar with. And I worry that labeling stuff that isn’t racism as racism waters down what racism actually is.

I didn’t really like the halftime show, but that’s because it’s not the kind of thing I usually listen to. I didn’t dislike it, it was just kind of…neutral to me. I’m guessing if I knew the tracks I would’ve enjoyed it more.

I did like the set design. It was pretty cool.

Had it been country music I would’ve actively disliked it.

I didn’t like it because i couldn’t understand what the man was saying. HipHop isn’t my jam so i wanted to hear this ultra-popular artist put on a show.
      I didn’t understand 90% of his lyrics.

Was the mix awful for anyone else?

The difference is you (and I) didn’t make a big fuss to make sure everyone in our social circles is aware of the fact we didn’t like it. If someone asks me, I’ll say “yeah the clown car thing was super fun and the backup dancers did good and the guy on the lamppost, what was he doing up there? But yeah not my thing.”

But that would imply that I thought the talent was talented and worked hard to put on a good show, which if I was a racist pos I would not want people to think I thought that.

So to recap: not liking something that isn’t to your taste is not racism, but declaring it excessively within certain social circles certainly can be a form of virtue signalling… The signaled virtue being how white you are.

That term was watered down several years ago. Which is sad, because it’s supposed to be impactful and mean something when heard. Now it’s a reactionary term for “thing/person I don’t like”. I know we’ll return to normalcy eventually, but damn, it’s taking a long time.

The difference is that you’re not calling it “DEI”, highlighting the fact that you just use that as a substitute for the n word, considering that all the performers were black and there was no diversity there.

I’m just going by what I’m reading online but to me it seems like a fair assumption that the people crying “DEI”, and who didn’t mind being in the same company as neo-nazis when it came to who they were supporting politically, are probably racist.

Yeah I also didn’t care for it, but that’s cause i don’t listen to Kendrick Lamar and I find rap hard to enjoy if you’re unfamiliar with the artist/lyrics (maybe it’s just me or my hearing, but stadium/concert rap is impossible to decipher).

Looking around at opinions, a lot of people enjoyed it so seems like he was a good pick.

70% of NFL fans are white and 53% of players are black.

So the white fans want to watch black athletes but not have anything to do with black artists. They can probably block out that the players are mostly Black, Hispanic and mixed race because they have helmets on and are just jerseys to them.

The underlying assumption here seems to be that white people don’t listen to hip-hop, which I don’t think is true at all. I think Superbowl audiences just span several generations and Kendrick, while pretty popular, isn’t so famous to be known by a lot of old people. This has been an issue with Superbowl acts for a while now… there’s not as much of a monoculture with pop music as there used to be, and so musicians aren’t reaching the same status in pop culture as they used to.

Well I didn’t want to type out more stats from where I found them but the bigger majority of the white breakdown was 55+, which probably does have a smaller group of hip-hop listeners than lower age groups.

I’m 54 and grew up as rap was invented and became popular. I wouldn’t expect many people older than me to dig it. And like country music, I like the older rap. What can I say? Our musical tastes get frozen in our teens and 20s.

If you start wide with your musical taste then your taste can still be pretty diverse, but I agree older music has more depth than most things coming out now.

Tool, NIN, Rage against the Machine have messages that are hard and heavy but mean something. They take multiple listens to fully open your mind to what they are saying but sound awesome even before you know the whole point.

90% of that audience seemed to know when to scream “Mustard”, “Certified Pedophile” and “A-Minor” during the show so I doubt 90% of us haven’t heard the music.

Nothing happened. Kendrick played some music and people documented people’s disapproval online, screenshotted them for a polarizing article about race.

Since ridiculous racist rhetoric exists SOMEWHERE on the internet, we will never know how the hatred is distributed over the usa population to accurately represent them because we are too dumb to question our newsfeeds. Instead we try to engage meaningfully with what we are fed.

I am totally out of the loop on the Kendrick/drake battle and don’t listen to them. But, without verging too far into me being exactly who this meme is about, compared to other half time shows it seemed smaller? Like there didn’t seem to really be any other guest artists and it felt like it was building to a big moment that just never really happened. That could have been the A Minor song, but I just didn’t get it. The audio mix on the broadcast didn’t help. The music seemed turned down very low. I was watching it the whole time thinking I feel like I’m missing something and this might be really cool. /shrug
