List below.
Depending on the game it’s resolution/framerate improvements, HDR support, mouse controls or gameshare/gamechat support.
- ARMS
- Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain
- Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
- Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics
- Game Builder Garage
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
- Pokémon Scarlet
- Pokémon Violet
- Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury
- Super Mario Odyssey
- The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
- The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
I decompiled Echoes of Wisdom. It uses the pretty horrible Hejl Dawson tonemapper. Pretty sure the HDR is going to be fake inverse tonemapping.
Thanks for your work!
Hejl Dawson tonemapper
No idea what this means, but definitely curious. Do you have any links explaining how this works to share?
Helm Dawson tonemapper is a filmic tonemapper built by EA years ago. It’s very contrasty, similar to ACES (What Unreal mimics in SDR and uses for HDR).
The problem is, it completely crushes black detail.
https://www.desmos.com/calculator/nrxjolb4fc
Here’s it compared to the other common Uncharted2 tonemapper:
Everything under 0 is crushed.
To note, it’s exclusively an SDR tonemapper.
I’ve found this tonemapper in Sleeping Dogs as well and when modding that game for HDR, it was very noticeable there how much it crushed. Nintendo would need to change the tonemapper to an HDR one or, what I think they’ll do, fake the HDR by just scaling up the SDR image.
To note, I’ve replaced the tonemapper in Echoes of Wisdom with a custom HDR tonemapper via Ryujinx and it’s entirely something Nintendo can do. I just doubt they will.
Cool stuff, thanks!
Edit: For those interested in examples, I was doing some googling on the topic and found this page comparing several tonemappers: https://github.com/meemknight/tone-mappers
And also this link with ACES vs Hejl Dawson comparison images that shows well the loss of detail in darker areas: https://bb.oolite.space/viewtopic.php?t=21249
I wonder why the paid patches for the other ones.
Nintendo seems to be breaking these patches in 3 “groups”.
- Performance upgrades only -> Free
- Performance upgrades+ additional functionality -> Free with Online+Expansion, Paid otherwise (BOTW, TOTK)
- Performance upgrades+ DLC-like additional content -> Paid (Kirby, Mario Party)
Performance upgrades+ additional functionality -> Free with Online+Expansion, Paid otherwise (BOTW, TOTK)
You mean the smart phone apps? Nobody asked them. They should put all performance upgrades free and paid for the extras. One more reason why consoles suck against PC.
Yeah, I agree they’re kinda lame as “functional upgrades” and probably not worth paying extra, but I was just clarifying the difference between the paid and free upgrades so far.
FWIW, performance should already be better even without the DLC, just by running on better hardware. You just won’t get HDR and the phone app extras.
In this list of patch notes, the only games that specifically mention framerate are ones that had capped framerates - the updates are to uncap them. Any game that’s already not hitting its target/max framerate will benefit even without a patch.
Get you used to it, so it becomes normalised nice
The first hit is always free…
Curious to see performance reports. If Echoes of Wisdom is finally stable I’ll pick it up.
The real question is if third parties will do anything to fix up some of their games. The titles I’d most like to play on Switch 2 already have shoddy Switch 1 ports, and I fear the titles that will get ported to Switch 2 will again mostly be above its weight class.
Echoes of wisdom was great on the Switch too, definitely worth picking up regardless. ❤️
Edit: oh you mean pick up the 2. I get it.
I held off on Echoes because I’ve seen some pretty bad reports about its performance issues.
It’s weird game in the performance aspect because it would probably feel very stable if they had locked it at 30FPS.
However they aim at 60FPS and the system can’t keep up, leading to some very grating framerate oscillation.
Ah. Well it’s a fun experience despite the frame rate issues, just like Link’s Awakening was.
Oh, okay I guess. From the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct they made it sound like the Scarlet and Violet update would be paid DLC for nothing more than improved frame rates, glad it’s not.

Why is this upvoted at all
Wish I knew. But I’ll tell you I’m not feeling very welcome or confortable about posting news on Lemmy again.
Thank you for sharing this info, I did found it useful.
I think a lot of people (me including) are just mad at Nintendo for:
- Paywalls of enchanted versions of the games (PS5 had those for free)
- Price hikes for the games and the console
- TOS that allows them just to brick your new console.
I do not think that you should take any hate here personally. You are doing this community a good service.
I can understand some degree of anger with Nintendo, but I still think the behavior we’re seeing in this thread is not acceptable.
Yeah this is a good take.
I’ve loved Nintendo games since NES, and I just hate how Nintendo is so litigious, and so cash grabby… I love Mario games but man… switch 2 is def a big wait and see.
Steam deck can more easily play old Nintendo games for free than switch 2 will, too

Finally super Mario sunshine, fire emblem and soul calibur and a GameCube controller for the switch.
We have reached peak humanity

Any reason you don’t like free updates?
Considering we had most of these features on a switch emulator a couple years ago, the cost of Nintendo switch online for basic features that should be free, and the inflated cost of the switch 2 and it’s games, I don’t need them pretending like they’re doing me a solid by patching games to work better on their emulator.

I’m willing to bet that they even stole code from Yuzu and/or Ryujinx to make the patching system happen. Bastards.
I was thinking the same thing.

This is a good thing.
It doesn’t fix their anti consumer practices by a long shot
Are you forgetting Nintendo’s shitty consumer practices, especially the bs they’re pulling recently?
No, but it’s totally okay to call out the good things when they happen. Not just the bad.
Believe it or not, free updates are good consumer practices.
Edit: Seems like I triggered folks who just like being triggered all the time. Enjoy your therapeutic downvote button. lol
sorry we fucked up the game on S1, but if you spend $500+ on a new console, we promise we fixed it.
Hyphlosion said free updates are good. You essentially made the claim that N screwed up the games on S1, and are now making us pay for a new product for them to “fix” it. Do you not see the gap in that thinking? The only area that logic partly makes sense is in context of games that ran poorly on S1 (as in an inconsistent FPS). With those games, the “Sorry we f’d up the game on S1, but if you spend more on a new console, we promise we fixed it” argument could make sense. But Hyphlosion isn’t talking about updates that stabilise the games FPS, they’re talking about updates that brought the FPS cap to something S1 wasn’t capable of, and to resolutions it couldn’t display.
That’s not N charging you to “Fix” a broken game, because the game wasn’t capable of running that well on S1 anyway. There’re games on S1 that run a near perfect 30fps, that can’t hit 60fps even if uncapped. Those games, if updated on S2 to support higher FPS, could run at 60fps (or more)
If that’s free, that’s not N being greedy by releasing a broken game, then making you buy a new system to fix it - it’s N taking advantage of new hardware to make the game run far better than was possible on S1. I’m not arguing N isn’t greedy, I’m arguing this is not an example of them being greedy. The real example of greediness, is them saying: “Hey, we’re gonna give free updates to these games. But those games are more popular (Zelda), so we’ve GOTTA charge them for it with upgrade packs. We’ll make SO MUCH MORE MONEY THAT WAY!! 🤑” That’s the only reason N is being selective about which games to charge upgrades for, and which not to.
Personally, I think the reason they aren’t adding free res & FPS updates for Mario Party Jamboree and Kirby Forgotten Land, is that they were already developing DLC content for said games (Jamboree TV & Star-Crossed Worlds) way before S2 was revealed. They realised they can make more if they choose to lock the free res & FPS updates behind purchases of DLC packs. And doing so would mean making a “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition”. People will accept, because they’d think the extra content makes it worth the price, and those who complain won’t have a loud enough voice for it to actually hinder them profiting from it. That’s what’s greedy here.
Of course GameFreak fucked up on Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Don’t put words in my mouth. There are more games on that list that are being updated for Switch 2, however. But thank you for proving my point.
Gotta love fanboyism. lol
I’m not a fanboy at all, fuck Nintendo. I have 2 steam decks and gaming PCs for my kid and I. I was making a joke at the exploitation of kids and parents.
You don’t have to be pro-Nintendo to be a fanboy. lol
Fanboyism goes both ways.
If you’re just coming to unrelated threads in [email protected] for miscellaneous off-topic whining… maybe don’t come to this community at all?

Considering you’re whining about things completely off-topic to this thread, there certainly are better places. If you’re literally just here to annoy people, that is the problem.
The toxicity in this thread somehow manages to be worse than reddit. :/
Yeah, the fact that the circlejerking now has to hijack completely unrelated threads is tiring.
