alt text for four panel image

First panel: a poorly drawn figure with half-closed lids asks a smart™ thermostat “hey little man hows it goin?” Second Panel: the smart thermostat points with a large arrow at a screenshot of a graphic that reads “August Trends: Heating & cooling compared with last year”, and shows zero hours more heating, 129 hours more cooling, with a small caption underneath that reads “On average, temperatures were 5 degrees warmer than August 2022” Third Panel: the poorly drawn figure with half-closed lids is shown with an unreadable smile in front of a semi-transparent image of a NASA article that reads “NASA Clocks July 2023 as Hottest Month on Record Ever Since 1880” Fourth Panel: the poorly drawn figure says “yea”

The facts became so undeniable that they’re forced to accept that things are changing, but now they insist that the changes are absolutely not related to our environmental fuckery but are a natural thing.

I was so confused by “Insulate Britain” - I thought it’s some weird satire and the showsection is called “Insult Britain”. But growing-concrete guy was serious and that was a real news show - crazy.

The most obnoxious thing is that even if we were seeing natural warming, the greenhouse effect would still be a real thing we have directly observed on Venus and the dumbest bastard in the world should consider not making things worse.

What does this even mean? The warming trends coincide directly with the start of the industrial revolution. Even without direct evidence (of which there is plenty), we have centuries of data to show that this level of warming is statistically significant and does not fall within natural warming/cooling cycles, such as el nino/la Nina.

Maybe this isn’t what you’re trying to say, but I think it’s extremely problematic when people use “fence sitting” arguments. It sounds like you’re saying “oh well, we don’t know how much warming is actually caused by man made causes… it could only be a little bit!” It’s a completely false narrative but it also gives credibility to people who want to block climate progress, and I really don’t think anyone should support that.

Humans are animals, everything we do therefore is a part of nature. “abnormal” doesn’t mean “unnatural”. just like the meteor wiping out the dinosaurs wasn’t “unnatural”.

Except we’ve kinda removed ourselves from nature by making medicine and ensuring even the dumbest of us survive.

You’re not a part of nature when there’s not much natural selection going on.

While I agree, it’s far too easy for dumb people to survive and reproduce, it’s all natural. Things like abortion and contraception are about the only unnatural things I can think of.

What, do aliens do abortions and contraception?

Or was it created and done by humans and therefore it’s natural?

                Stay consistent at least.

DO NOT INSTALL A SMART STAT OR ENROLL IN A “ENERGY SAVING PROGRAM” this just gives control of the thermostat to other people in the name of “energy savings”.

Yeah that was never a consideration 20 years ago here in Sweden. It was a cool luxury but hardly a necessity.

Our homes are generally built to withstand harsh winters, so they’re great at absorbing and retaining heat. These summers are woeful, and this year wasn’t even that bad up here. We got off quite lightly.

I’m so glad we sacrificed the world for all that infinite growth we don’t get. It’s fantastic to not be able to afford a house and have no real hope for the future.

      So? Are you complaining that

      • your house is poorly insulated or
      • that you are in a bad place financially or
      • that Australia’s energy mix is not sustainable enough or
      • that you cannot afford a heat pump for efficient heating?

      Or is it something else?

Landlords don’t care about insulating properly

Energy prices are 30c per kwh, insane energy bill of 1000$ per month to heat to a cold temperature

This is using heat pump heating 💀

For a place to be “fit” for living in, it should cost less than a thousond a month in heating. All this while half the world is struggling with heat, wild isn’t it?
