It’s so hard to gain muscle, especially in later years. Unless you’re using steroids expect to see 10-12 lbs of muscle growth over 10 years with a solid diet of protein intake and lifting 4-5 times a week based on the last study I saw comparing traditional workouts to steroid programs.

Oh, there’s the problem! You’re using a machine designed to literally look past muscle and other soft tissue!

My general advice is to never set yourself visual goals and expectations. Social media has completely distorted the image of natural lifter by promoting top 1% responders and steroid abusers.

Accept the fact that you won’t see a lot of gains until 2-3 years into consistent lifting unless you’re genetically gifted. Focus on technique, nutrition and recovery and find a good rhythm that allows you to put gym into a background routine like brushing your teeth and your body will eventually reward you.

Setting yourself standards and expectations without knowing your genetic growth potential is a slippery slope that almost always results in misery and disappointment. Don’t do it. Keep lifting.

Public service announcement that you have to eat like a fat piece of shit if you wanna gain muscle. 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day too. You weigh 140lbs? 140g of protein per day

You won’t gain much mass but you can definitely see a slight difference in tone after a week of serious workout in my experience
