We listened to 20+ year old music when I was in High School. Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Marley, Grateful Dead, and plenty of others along with current music of the time.
Judgy people are the ones throwing you in the washed up area.
Nickelback had a banger or two, the problem is they rehashed that one banger into the ground. Releasing the same sone over and over again with slightly different lyrics.
That’s what started the hate. If you find one of those early songs without context…
Nickelback songs are fine, but that’s the thing, they’re all pretty much the same level of “fine”. They have some good lyrics sometimes, but nothing groundbreaking or more deep than “life is short, enjoy the moment” or “I miss being young”. The tunes are fine, but if you start listening to a Nickelback playlist they’re very samey so everything melts together and sounds like one single large song.
Nickelback are a great band that played top 40 acceptable rock by choice. They CAN thrash, they choose not to, and they are fucking loaded as a consequence.
Ive sat in dive bars and talked to a great many musicians about their artistic integrity. Ive never met anyone with real talent who had a tale of woe about selling out, probably because they dont drink in dive bars anymore.
Good music is just good music.

I did too… now my kids like Brittany Spears.
I’m just waiting for:
Them: I found this great classic rock band, Nickelback.
Me: Screams Internally

They’re “fine”, like a McDonald’s hamburguer.

NSYNC and backstreet boys are making an unironic comeback with my youngest son’s peers, too.
“Toxic” remains an excellent track.
