we need an adblockers blockers blocker

no, what is needed is an app that helps track who benefits from thr apps that annly you most:

        • ownership of companies pushing annoying ads
        • management of companies pushing annoying ads
        • find the connection between those and the products you maybe want to buy in shops or in internet before you buy, then instead of buying, let the app send the seller a message that you did not buy because of that connection.
        • do this in numbers with lots of people and see what happens to the advertising jungle

the point is NOT buying because of advertising AND let them know it, so they can learn to improve themselves.

they wanted your data? let them have it the way you want them to.

same with any platform. ask the creator of your choice to also publish using patreon and you’ll become a member then, getting the content free of ads. better more directly pay who does the actual work, not all the big tech harvesting all the benefit inbetween.

so what maybe is needed here could be a free or even self-hostable platform that also allows payed subscriptions.

I think they are clamping down and trying to force people to watch yt in Google’s desired way. They have managed to stop most Piped instances via ip banning and also requesting users to “sign in to confirm you are not a robot”. I wish their was a proper alternative at this point. It would be great if something like Peertube took off.

If this bullshit is/becomes a thing for every YouTube video, I’m gonna have to do a lot of annoying copying and pasting or just eschew pretty much all videos on Lemmy 🤬

Alternatively, just use the share link on any function, and route it to the appropriate app. In this case, share a Youtube Link to the official app or to NewPipe.

There is a similar thing already written, minus the automatic part. You set it as your default browser and lets you do all sorts of things to the link before opening it in a browser. It lets you choose which app to use the link in afterwards. You can unshort urls, it checks for malware or redirects… You get the picture. Not sure if this helps with what you are after:

Not necessary, apps can register to open links from specific domains.

The only caveat is that if they don’t also own the domain - like Google owns both youtube.com and the YouTube Android app - you have to manually go to the settings for the app in System Settings and enable them, under ‘Open by default’.

Might be cool to start advocating for some YouTube creators to also post their stuff on federated video hosting/sharing instances. Peertube is pretty cool. I mean shit, if any of you are thinking of being creators, and you make a video, put it both on YouTube and some Peertube instance.

Edit: replaced a word with “instance” and added word “instance”

You have to pay for the backup/storage of your videos.

Whenever I have issues with YouTube refusing to do things it used to do, I stop using it for a while and eventually they put it back. If you’re not willing to do that, I find that the NewPipe app is better than the native YouTube app. But be warned that occasionally Google makes changes that break New Pipe and you need to wait a couple days for the devs to catch up to the change.

I then realized that maybe I could set a global rule for all the YouTube addresses to open in NewPipe and I could so I did!

I then clicked the link that originally gave me the OP message. It opened in NewPipe… And I got the fucking “not available in your country” message in stead!

really, yt stopped to play sound on the website for me (beeing logged in), there is a banner to “activate sound” but it always disappears unclickable fast, so i searched and found webtube, an app that basically loads their website, but has one feature youtube has not: “sound” *lol

now i wonder how many of these apps really are “third” party apps and not really theirs only masked as third party for getting that gain of trust all the “others” get when it comes to big techs with their very own “public” crime records …

would be too easy for them to create some small apps, act as if those were 3rd party software but harvest that spyoil (of the 21 century) anyway.

Literally did this 10 hours ago using this guide: https://lemmy.world/post/857701. You need an earlier version apk than APKpure has though (19.16.39). I was surprised with how easy it is tbh. Just had to find a decent site to get that particular apk from but that’s a simple Google search away.

NewPipe, on the other hand, just works perfectly immediately. Other than temporarily falling to Google’s evil machinations against alternative frontends once, there’s been absolutely no trouble with it.

One thing most guides don’t show is that you have to match the YouTube app version with the suggestion. They implemented a handy search search button which searches for the needed app version in your browser too.

But if you do not need your account then Newpipe is excellent too.

They have always hosted AVC videos. They have to for old/incompatible devices, because literally any toaster and software on earth will play it.

But sometimes they are funny about what gets encoded to what, and of course they will always try to default to av1/vp9 and opus.
