I’m not sure how I feel about this, and I’m a non-smoker who hates cigarette (well, any kind of) smoke, and despite getting permanently nose-hit by CoVid, I can still smell cigarette smoke from miles away.

As much as it sounds lovely at first, this is restricting smokers way too much. If, as a European you find it ridiculous that you have to hide your alcohol bottle/flask/can with a paper bag in public in parts of the US, then this is even more restrictive. Apart from the dismissive answers to the question “Where should I smoke now”, the only typical answer is “at home”. Now, if these smokers live together with non-smokers then this is either forcing them to smoke under their nose or find the nearest place where it is allowed (good luck).

On the other hand, fuck yes. It is forbidden in bus/metro stops where I live, but not in the narrow, enclosed passageway leading out of the stop. Therefore, smokers get out of the train, start smoking as soon as they leave the stop (to be honest: right in the stop), and the two slow walkers right in front of me prevent me from overtaking, and the same is true behind me - so I have to inhale that shit while we walk along that long passageway. And not like it was much different on a busy pavement, in outside seating, etc.

If they actually disposed correctly of their cancer-sticks I would prefer to be a ban only on urban areas. But seeing how the entire floor is littered by the paper dildos, I think smokers haven’t shown they can responsibly smoke in non-urban areas. Fuck them.

This reminds me a little bit of judging any kind of social (or ethnic?) group by the loudest ones. You don’t see the decent ones not leaving cig butts. On the other hand, maybe it doesn’t even matter if there are people who still leave them.

But similarly to the prohibition era, I don’t think this will make smokers quit; this will just push the users to smoke/litter in less controlled areas. I hope I’m wrong.

Is alcohol still legal? Afaik at this point we have more evidence to the dangers of alcohol than vaping

            • There’s studies suggesting that vaping has a lot of negative effects as well, particularly on the lungs. Inhaling smoke or damps just isn’t great for one’s health it seems. Vaping also release a number of poisonous substances (propylene glycol and various aldehydes to name a few). Vaping also seems to increase your risk of cancer, but studying that is tough still because vaping is fairly new.

I wasn’t arguing it isn’t harmful. I’m just interested how there’s so much public effort to go after it but seemingly not alcohol even a bit.

                • Vaping is new, it’s more likely it can be stopped in its tracks now, compared to alcohol which is sadly ingrained into our culture for thousands of years now. Though I should say that in some countries alcohol usage is trending down as well.

Yes, but it’s also controlled and pretty well regulated in terms of what you can sell. E-cigs are not, or at least not enough, leading to the sale of devices which deliver nicotine in incredibly potent doses, which makes them very addictive (especially because nicotine is one of the most addictive substances in the world). Couple that with sleek packaging, and in some countries advertising which will be seen by kids, and you have a device which is creating a new generation of nicotine addicts.

Don’t get me wrong, vaping is generally healthier than smoking, and thus better for existing nicotine addicts. We should, however, be doing everything to avoid creating new addicts.

I think it is more about that drinking in public is legal in many countries (also in many it isn’t). So for the “discouraging” it should also be banned from the public equally.

In regards to “regulated what you can sell” You can also buy anything from 2,5% beer-mix stuff over 40-60% Schnaps and even up to 80% high destillate for cooking purposes. Which are still drunk by some alcoholics. Strong alcohol burns your throat away, but it is available on the market easily.

E-cigs are regulated in Europe, or more precisely e-liquids are, which is what determines the amount of nicotine rather than the device itself. Of course you can DIY liquids with stupid amounts of nicotine, but what you can buy off-the-shelf, including those terrible prefilled single-use e-cigs (which should be banned IMO) won’t deliver you more nicotine than regular cigarettes.

Nobody is talking about making vaping illegal entirely.

Alcohol already usually has restrictions on drinking it when walking down the street.

Sure there are some places (e.g. UK) where it isn’t, but even there local authorities have the power to forbid it if they want to.

Currently smoking doesn’t have this, and neither does vaping.

There are obvious health benefits from making smoking as annoying as possible for smokers which will lead to long term medical cost decrease. Secondary smoke from ecigs outdoors is still neglible compared to cars, farts and people in general.

I find lots of things annoying outdoors but I guess it’s not so common here to become an issue. Ecigs users are usually conscious enough to keep distance from other people. That’s the neat part, you’re not supposed to smoke at all.
They can’t ban cigarettes outright, yet. But they can make sure it isn’t publicly visible, cool, or easy to do anymore.
Smokers are supposed to be forced into enclosed, limited rooms just for smoking, separating it from all other activities.
The goal is to break the cycle that gets young people to start smoking.

Make smokers pay more for health insurance. There’s so many good ways of handling the problem. Banning people from smoking outside is just fuel for all the fucking Nazis that would love to get rid of the EU. And it won’t change a fucking Thing. Smoke detectors don’t respond to cigarette smoke, unless you cram one smoker per m² in a room and have them all smoke half a pack, with all windows shut.

I have seen indoor parties at flats with smoke detectors, which never went off, despite heavy smoking indoors. Meanwhile something burning on the stove set off the detector, as it should.

The article says the focus is on kid-friendly outdoor areas like parks and near schools, which makes total sense as a place to start. Doesn’t seem like it’s everywhere outside being banned. And generally encouraging people to not take up smoking in the first place is wonderful. For people who smoke, quitting is the biggest thing they can do to improve their health.

As much as I like the idea of getting rid of smoking altogether, this is a huge infringement on self-determination. Sure, go ahead and declare certain public areas as non-smoking zones. I’m absolutely fine with that. Even if it means that the entire inner city is such a zone. No one should have to inhale secondhand smoke. But if you’re somewhere where you don’t bother anyone, why should that be illegal?

I have found basically all smokers are inconsiderate cunts. I had to put a no smoking sign in the window at the back door to my business because people from the bar next door are smoking near it and the smoke is drawn into my building through vents. Once the sign went up the smoking increased, I had to remove the vents. And now every day when I leave work there is a pile of butts at my back door.

That’s usually the amount of distance I take. I don’t like my wife or anyone else smoking near me either. Just be considerate, that’s all.

Nice to hear you take proper precautions. Second hand smoking gave me a chronic bronchitis and my cat asthma, so I’m more than aware of the risks.

they should get a person sized air tight box, get inside, smoke as much as they’d like. but they shouldn’t be allowed to open the box again because i don’t want that shit going outside.

Where heroin addicts supposed to shoot some smack in their veins?

While they also look unpleasant, at least I am not forced to inhale their shit.

Frankly if smokers were more considerate I wouldn’t be that bitter.

You don’t need to announce every time you’re blocking someone, it’s a bit obnoxious to all the readers. I’m not going to moderate the insults at the moment but this thread is on the verge of being locked or whatever… and this is not meant to you. Everyone should try keeping it a little bit more civil. Chill, this is just a bit of news, no need to start a war between smokers and non smokers.

How about focusing on getting rid of diesel fumes first? That shit smells awful and is way worse for you than 2nd hand smoke or vapes.

There are too many people here that seem perfectly happy with the idea of altogether outlawing cigarettes, tobacco, and vaping.

Huge reason no one goes to cinemas anymore is cuz you can’t vape in there as freely as you can at home.

I assure you, as someone who doesn’t smoke or vape, that is not the reason I don’t go to cinemas.
On the contrary, being trapped in a room with dozens of smokers or vapers would further discourage me from going.
