The word “free” does not refer to price; it refers to freedom.

    1. The freedom to use your wife as you wish, for any purpose.
    2. The freedom to study how your wife works, and change her so she works for you as you wish, instead of her controlling you.
    3. The freedom to redistribute your wife to your neighbor.
    4. The freedom to distribute your modified wife to others. By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changed wife.

Seems like what Dominique Pelicot considered his wife to be. Not an example I am willing to follow, I’ll tell you that.

You have to keep in mind that your wife is her own main maintainer and can decide whether to merge your changes.

You can fork her to obtain someone you have greater influence over but that’s a big responsibility and not everything you want to do with your fork may be advisable from a legal or moral standpoint.

    I am the wife.

Unrelated, why aren’t there more women in Linux spaces? We’ll never get to the bottom of it I fear. I haven’t read the comments in this thread yet, I’m sure they’re all completely uncontroversial.

      heteronormative assumptions

You could still have a wife yourself, with whichever licensing agreement the two of you negotiate.

because linux users are tech oriented, the market is barely touched by linux, and tech oriented people are disproportunately male/not cisgender women.

Hannah Montana Linux can only do so much /s

edit : added “not cisgender women.” I really don’t want to start a thing about this statement, it’s to align with the pendant that replied to this post.

they are probably non cisgender, and that’s as far as I’m going with this statement.

I was being cheeky, lol. Thanks for the update. Was not intending to come off as trying to start a serious conversation about gender identity. I debated throwing a /s but figured the rule 37 reference was enough.

We need more information to reach people. So far I’ve only seen people be into Linux when they have less social life growing up so they spend time online (not in tiktoks or such like now).

Since most people hearing about Linux from class or other people only hear about the bad aspects or how hard it is if they even hear about it. When I came to US university, I was so surprised noone knew about linux or cared enough except handful of people. And most people did it for work (super computer people, grad students) that didn’t like it and express their opinions openly.

An actually helpful answer is that there is a creator on tiktok called offlain who makes a series of videos called “try not to get scared scariest stories”. The series has a rotating cast of characters such as Mr teeth, the meatworm, evil knife guy, the fuck you guy, Jeffs the killer, and The Creature. The creature is a cow that the narrator is scared of. Here’s a popular The Creature story: I am so excited for the movie, I exclaims with excitement. But little did I know it would be a feature, a creature feature. Featuring… The Creature."

When someone gives you that emotionless stare, it means not only is you comment not funny, it’s not really socially acceptable.

Linux users are not all male, or all straight, or single. Outside of incel groups, most groups aren’t (probably even they have members who secretly aren’t!) 😃

Yeah, as a married lesbian linux user the joke is gross and reminds me why so often tech related spaces are so male dominated

The first step will be for more and more of tech management to actually confront their misogyny. And not just the obvious stuff like this, but also subtle stuff like how women’s professional performances are often seen as worse when not blinded.
