I mean, you do you, but my mother took the same approach and she can’t buy a car, gets routinely denied for apartments, and generally has zero trust with any bank. You don’t have to like the system, but the only person you hurt by fighting against it is yourself.

It’s not a bad strategy if used sparingly. Derogatory notes fall off your credit report after 7 years.

I strategically defaulted a CC in early adulthood and by the time I needed a mortgage was back in the 800s.

Like @[email protected] says, I fairly strategic about it. It’s mostly medical debt that can’t even go on the credit report anymore and maybe a store credit card or 2 that was used to replace the AC. I also generally make sure to pay the bills to banks that are known to actually take people to court e.g. Capital One

It’s my goal to reach a credit score of 1! That’s how you win, I think.

I dont pay medical bills that dont get passed to me at the hospital. I recently paid for an ER visit and ambulance ride, only to be sent a collection for the same exact bill 2 months later.

I’ve learned the longer you wait, and more times your debt is sold, the more likely it is whoever is trying to collect can’t produce legal proof.

Because i lost my job last year and was living on $300 a week weeknight bartending. I can pay for rent and groceries or i can pay for my student loans and credit card debt.

I hope you never find yourself in a position where you jave to choose, because it’s a living hell

      want

You’re assuming a whole hell of a lot, odds are good they fucking can’t!

You’re also assuming that the debt is valid, which is often not the case with medical debt: Shit gets billed wrong, patients may not even receive notice, and by the time it gets to the collection agency, they may not be in a position to contest it.

Glad you’re lucky enough that this has never been a problem though, congratulations on your good fortune. You may fancy yourself a self made success, but that is an illusion: Unless you’re independently wealthy (perhaps, even if you are), you’re only one bad day away from joining those people.

      Never forget that.

People deserve a comfortable life without being under the yoke of some bill collectors.

Someone has to pay for it. Also the “free” healthcare isn’t what it’s hyped to be. Have fun waiting for near eternity or being denied a hip replacement.

Classic right-wing propaganda, you have been tagged.

It’s actually terrible here in America as far as wait times go compared to EU countries

loool is the right winger in the room with us now?

Classic cop-out. Not a right winger and not living in America.

I have actually experienced the “free” healthcare, unlike your pipedream. And if the American government works so beautifully as it does then I know if they ever tried it the system would be the most glorious disaster ever seen.

Take it from me, you’re better off leaving the US of A then ever seeing a good-working system.

You have no fucking clue what you’re talking about. Any developed nation has a better healthcare system than the US. We pay the most for the worst outcomes.

Even the UKs NHS is better than the shit we have now.

This is the country where just needing an ambulance is $5000 by itself.

This is the country where peoples last hope to live is an experimental drug that their insurance denied because mehhh profitssss.

This is the country where married folks have had to divorce because one of them became terminally I’ll just so their bills wouldn’t drain the life insurance

This is the country where the insurance companies celebrate claim denials

This is the country where people are regularly sadled with 10k, 50k, 100k+ bills because their insurance denied their claims despite paying thousands into it

So fucking what if you’re even right and you have to wait 6+ months for a hip replacement. Any body who actually needs one would gladly wait and pay very little for it than in the US where you’ll still wait 6+ months for it AND have to pay 25k for the pleasure.

If you aren’t truly right wing, you’re definitely starting to drink the Kool-aid.
