A reddit user posted screenshots of a gas giant that were beautifully adorned with the colors of the trans flag.

This attracted bigots with their agenda to disrupt the community discussion and the mods shut it down by locking the post.

So the poster created a second one with more photos as a symbolic gesture that the message was simply about pretty planets that they felt represented them-

It too, was locked.

I made a post there proclaiming that I am leaving until I see the mods replaced with those that will not give in to bigotry, and I linked to this community with the hope that people can find a new home here.

Sooooo… welcome new friends!

Reddit is so big that it encapsulates everyone. You’ll find far left. You’ll find far right. You’ll find a few people who somehow missed the joke, and think birds not being real is an actual conspiracy.

My point is, you can’t say “reddit is _____”, because they have 500 million monthly users.

Even Lemmy, which is a fraction of the size, has far right people here.

I still lurk some of the drama entertainment subs like AITA and relationship advice and there’s still a strong left lean on those subs. Posts on the lines of “AITA for ending personal relationships with Trump supporters” aren’t rare while I don’t recall seeing any from the other side (though there have been some that avoid mentioning anything more than “political differences” and keep the specifics vague and might be from the other side, but the fact that this is the closest says enough on its own).

Comments that support Trump get downvoted, though more neutral “voice of reason” style comments can do ok.

Lots of AI posts, though. It’s been going from a Jerry Springer kind of vibe to more of a Jerry Seinfeld vibe, where it’s sometimes still entertaining but mostly made up.

Maybe there’re better examples to argue your point but not being nice to fascists doesn’t automatically give a space “a strong left lean.” It just makes it not fascist.

That’s fair. It could be neoliberal overall, since it does still seem friendly to minorities (at least the drama entertainment subs are, I don’t assume the whole site is like that), but economics and politics don’t often come up, other than the politics of supporting or opposing Trump.

So I guess it’s more accurate to say it’s not far right leaning.

If the “discussion” was getting too heated for the mods to handle, locking (but not deleting!) the thread sounds like the right call. What’s the alternative? Ban one bigot, five more will appear. Ban them and lock the thread to prevent more bigotry.

Aren’t there options to restrict posting to people that have been around the sub for a while though? Pretty sure I have seen others do it. Might be a better choice as it means you are only banning community members that are bigots and bigots from outside of the community can’t comment.

That allows the community to continue to enjoy the place.

Locking a thread that gets heated and goes wildly off topic is normal moderating actions.
It stops any kind of inflow of rule breaking, it stops all arguments, and it gives mods time to sort out what’s happened.
If an new/inexperienced mod encounters something they don’t know how to handle, locking is the safest bet. It keeps the content, prevents escalation.

The behaviour afterwards is what defines if the mods support bigotry or not.

Ideally the mods wade through the bullshit, delete the bigotry comments and ban the bigots with the reason of “being a bigot”. Then release a post saying that bigotry is not tolerated, and make any changes to rules that are appropriate. Consulting the community where appropriate, and being as transparent as possible.
All of this takes time. Locking a post is the first stage.

By creating a second thread with more similar content, the OP is subverting moderators trying to moderate.
There is already a thread that got out of hand, which mods are struggling to deal with.
By creating ANOTHER thread, it doubles the mods workload. The expected mod action would be to lock it instantly with a comment stating they are tidying up an existing post, clarifying rules, and will contact OP when they can safely repost. Next best thing is to just delete it.

The correct response from OP would be to ask for a public comment why the original thread was locked.
This would prompt a moderator comment - hopefully - that they are dealing with it, and will give a timeline of expected deadlines.

It’s not the mods that are bigots, it’s that Reddit is a cesspool. And fun communities can easily be overwhelmed if targeted.
If the mods hadn’t encountered this behaviour before, then they have to figure out - amongst themselves and with the community - how to proceed.

I wasn’t there, I can’t be arsed reading Reddit bullshit. From the context you’ve given, I’ve come to the above conclusion.

Is it possible they just don’t feel like dealing with and interacting with the hate? The mods are modding a game subreddit they aren’t making a space where they should be expected to engage in culture wars. It’s depressing having to interact with a ton of hate.

Im bi and I wouldn’t want to deal with people engaging in hateful discussions about bisexual erasure on a subreddit that has nothing to do with sexuality or social issues. That isn’t the space for it.

Are they obligated to deal with hate when what they signed on for was moderating a subreddit about a video game?

The fuck is wrong with you? Oh, the poor little moderators have to do what the name of their positions fucking implies they should be doing? How dare we feel entitled to demand those who volunteered to do a job actually do their job?!

If I volunteered to help at a soup kitchen and then just never showed up, the soup kitchen has a right to be upset with me. They are, in fact, entitled to be upset with me because I made a promise to help. And then I broke that promise.

You think they should just have to accept dealing with hate non-stop because you have zero empathy for these people as you have made clear in your posts.

You seem to think subreddits shouldn’t be focused on the subject of the subreddit which is really weird.

          • @MothmanDelorian
            link

Shutting down the thread was how they stopped the flood of hate. Bans were likely given out to people acting rudely or were promoting hate or violence.

You know if you are LGBT+ constantly seeing hate directed at other LGBT+ folks is draining?

            • @AlexanderTheDead
              link

But the main problem isn’t really resolved. The bad actor is still in the community, and so they will still support and promote anti LGBT rhetoric.

Shutting down a thread is bad for good faith participants in a conversation and is good for bad faith trolls that are just there to rile people up.

Besides, you kinda completely avoided my point. How is banning someone confrontation? If anything, shutting down the thread is more confrontation? Because those people are still in the community and can just post somewhere else. Gay people exist and get harassed for existing. What has been accomplished?

It is resolved. The pic started fights and had no relevance to the overall game. After it was pulled OP reposted it which means even though they knew it wasn’t ok for that space, as the mods locked it, they were going to perpetuate the problem so the mods banned one of the people causing problems.

Leadership sets the tone of a community. If the leaders are going to allow hate towards some part of the community, that effect will spread. So why would they allow hate of any type?

I would love to see things get more active over here. It’s a pretty good community on Reddit, but the mods are way too heavy handed.

If you watch “new” when a big update drops, you’ll see almost every post about it get removed. Only the special chosen post gets to stay up, and it’s never the first one. I can’t help wondering if it’s a karma grab.

NMSCoordinatesExchange has some annoying rules, too. If you post a gallery of finds it can get removed for not being split into multiple posts. If I post a gallery, it’s because I don’t have the time or inclination to spam the sub with dozens of related items. Would they rather nobody sees them at all? Seems like a poorly considered rule for a place that’s supposed to encourage sharing of content.
