Nobody wants to invade Russia. Whats absurd is that we sit around and let them invade other countries. I understand the desire to avoid escalation but if all other avenues fail there should be a willingness among free nations to boot them out swiftly and efficiently and make it clear that their dreams of empire building are done and it’s time to get their house in order instead of distracting themselves with destroying others.

It’s sad to witness the animosity towards Russia. The responsibility lies with Putin and those who actively support him - they seized power and manipulated the populace, and commit war crimes. Not all Russians do that. Despite his suppression of independent media and the severe penalties, including up to 15 years of imprisonment, for engaging in not only “anti-war” but even “pro-peace” protests, a significant number of people continue to oppose the war.

Putin’s narrative revolves around the notion that “in the West, they harbor hatred towards us, attempting to dismantle us.” By uttering “fuck Russia,” unwittingly or not, you’re just endorsing Putin and his propaganda. Please don’t do that. Instead, say “fuck Putin”.

True, but propagandists don’t care. They pick facts that support their view and discard ones that oppose it. So, for everyone who says “FUCK RUSSIA,” they answer with “SEE, SEE, WE ARE RIGHT, WE SHOULD RESIST AND FIGHT BACK.” They will just pull your words out of context.

So, if you are a responsible citizen, I ask you not to spread hatred towards our country, but to support it on the way to sanity, normality, and democracy. Please spread hatred towards propagandists, war criminals, and usurpers instead.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. I hadn’t thought about it like that, but I think you’ve got a point. When horrible people are leading a country, both horrible people and people that maybe don’t know any better will come out of the woodwork to support them and carry out their demands. That’s no reason to condemn an entire country, but every reason to condemn that leader. Blanket statements can very rarely be applied to a large group of people.

Russian here. Just to clarify, most of us won’t get upset if someone says “Fuck Russia”, as we understand that you mean “Fuck the Russian state” - lots of us been saying the same for a long time, as, believe it or not, living in an authoritarian state ain’t fun.

The line gets crossed when people say “Fuck Russians”, call for oppressive measure against Russian nationals, celebrate their deaths or even outright attack them. That’s fucked up.

Unfortunately though, Putin himself isn’t raping Ukrainian women, blowing up kids, destroying crops, etc. That’s on the Russians who are in Ukraine doing these things. As they showed in Nuremberg, following orders is not an excuse.

The only ones who would ever hear such message are not the ones involved in it. None of my friends raped Ukrainian women, nobody in my family blew kids up, I personally didn’t destroy any crops, why accuse all of us of something we didn’t do? Words like that are just pushing away people who don’t believe Putin’s lies.

Are your friends in Ukraine doing these things? I said there are Russians doing these things, not Putin. Other innocent Russians of course should not be blamed for the actions of these people, but innocent Russians should stop blaming mean people on the internet and instead call out the citizens who are making Russians look bad through committing war crimes.

It would be nice if it was just Putin. And it’s true that lots of Russians are opposed to the war. It’s even probably true that lots of them are as apolitical as they can be, just doing whatever they have to do to survive day by day.

But there are lots of Russians who support him. Even outside of Russia. There is, in fact, a large portion of the population that approves of him, despite the invasion into Ukraine. A lot of it is retired people, of course, but also shit-tons of people who listen mainly to Russian news sources, and therefore believe Putin’s propaganda.

Even if Putin were assassinated the next day, his replacement wouldn’t be much better. Hopefully they’d pull out of Ukraine, but they would likely be just as chauvinist and nationalist as Putin. Russia’s political spectrum is, unfortunately, very close to “50 shades of nationalism”, to the point where even Navalny had to curry favor with them to build up sufficient support. And nationalists (and fascists) tend to do stupid shit like invading neighboring countries.

I would agree that “fuck Russians” is going a step too far. But if Russia’s international reputation is shit right now, it’s no one’s fault but Putin’s, and it is unfortunately well-deserved. And, whether we like it or not, when you say “I’m from [country]”, that country’s reputation will affect how people see you. So if individual Russians around the world are facing stigma, that’s really unfortunate, but it’s the inevitable outcome of shit like this. It’s nothing new — after WWII, Germans had to deal with the exact same shit.

It’s not Putin who’s committing torture, rape, and genocide of Ukrainians. It’s not Putin who’s sailing the warships, driving the tanks, laying the mines, and pushing the buttons to launch missiles. And even if there are a significant number of russians who oppose the war, the majority of them don’t. The animosity towards russia will continue to be justified until russia stands firmly against genocide.

Maybe. “Edgy” to me implies people trying to emotionally manipulate others into reactions by lambasting or supporting certain viewpoints. But, and this may just be a definitions thing, I don’t think that implies that people who are being edgy don’t believe what they are purporting. Trolls I think though are manipulating completely regardless of their actual views. So maybe trolls are a subset of people who are being edgy.

It’s not good to dehumanize people. Even ones who commit atrocities.

Dehumanization is how we got here, it’s not a good path back, unless we wanna go in circles.

It’s subtle, but important, for us to keep human the worst humans. We need to keep salient that these atrocities are being committed by our own to our own humans. That we are all capable of it.

The downvotes just tell me that humans are doomed to repeat history.

The reason you don’t dehumanize people who commit atrocities isn’t (mainly) because they deserve more empathy. It’s because it’s important not to forget that these atrocities are committed by everyday humans. Normal I have a wife and kids, I joined the army as a kid out of high school or after being a warehouse clerk for a few years, I coach soccer in the summers, basic-ass humans.

When we dehumanize people like that it blinds us to the fact normal people can commit atrocities when sufficiently radicalized and trained to dehumanize others. It blinds us to the dangers posed by these ideologies when they’re in their initial stages.

When we dehumanize people like that it also mentally prepares us to accept when atrocities are committed against them, or even to become complicit in doing so.

You don’t humanize them for them. You do it to protect you and everyone you love from the dangers of dehumanizing others.

1917 the US and other Allies tried to intervene in the Russian Civil War on the side of the White Army.

Churchill argued at length that Russia had to be next after Germany fell. He probably was onto something there.

Also, the popularity of the Communist Parties in Europe at the time would probably have made such a confrontation quite awkward.

You should be wary of labelling an entire group by the actions of a few.

Do the war crimes committed in Abu Ghrabi make all Americans barbarian terrorists?

While it’s true that it’s not the entirety of the Russian population, there’s still the oligarchs, mercenaries, media outlets, the entire government body, and a fuck ton of the military, all more than happy to fuck over their ex-comrades as soon as they get the green light. I’m pretty sure that’s who we mean when we generalize “Russians”.

As a Latin American, this applies to Americans as well. Much love to a decent part (if not most) of the people there, but FUCK the US for fucking us all over with banana republics, neoliberalism, and red scare shenanigans, only for them to then have the galls to turn out to be xenophobic, warmongering, orangeman-loving fundamentalist pieces of shit.

Anyway, Russia, right. Fuck Putin and his greasy ball of oligarchs.

And the Americans used to be on the side of the Taliban when it suited them in a proxy war with Russia.

The point I’m making is that most people want a quiet and happy life. I know that dehumanising the enemy is a natural part of war, but try to be mindful of that and leave civilians out of it.

The Mujahideen of the 80s weren’t the Taliban. The Mujahideen-led government of the early 90s was quite explicitly attacked and overthrown by the Taliban, and reformed into the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance, which still existed by the time of our intervention in Afghanistan in 2001.

Huh, no I’m not? I’m saying the army’s and the media’s reaction to war crimes is better in the west than in Russia. Russian society seems pretty fucked up, but I know that most of individual Russians don’t have a say in it.

What a silly response. Americans can’t get their leaders to allow them a minimum living wage, yet this guy wants Russians to topple a terrorist state. Stop with the group labeling. Not everyone has the knowledge / courage / ability / nothing-to-lose attitude that it takes to fight organized government mafia that’s been throwing opponents out of the Kremlin windows without restraint. Let’s give the Russian people the benefit of doubt regarding their intentions, and not call them all terrorists at least.

russians are attempting a genocide upon Ukraine. They are castrating/beheading captured soldiers, murdering/kidnapping/brainwashing Ukrainian children. Until they prove otherwise, russia is a terrorist state and russians are terrorists.

How is that relevant to the article?

Russia: a capitalist oligarchy, which hasn’t been communist for 30 years.

Wagner Group: A private military/mercenary group/soldiers for hire.
