I still have the app on my phone. After over a decade of use, I can’t bear to uninstall. Seeing it’s icon is like seeing a loved one’s ashes in my living room.

reddit content was already going downhill, bunch of repost bots, comments being ripped from other commenters.

when the API changes were announced it started getting worse.

RIF worked for a while after the initial deadline in read only mode and then the content went reeealy downhill.

basically if it wasn’t something like news/politics/sports where it’s just content being linked to, but actual user generated content then it was just reposts, but like daily.

Personally I never used any 3rd party reddit clients because I avoid apps in general, and was really used to the old.reddit dating back to 2008 or so. However, I did give up on reddit finally based on the API issue, I had a successful API app based on another site years ago, and the way Splez acted was pretty much the same nonsense we were subjected to. We made something that the site members loved, and were able to eke out a decent living by developing and supporting it. We were always dealing with the site changing things, and the CEO had this attitude like we were interloper parasites making money from his property. We had the rug pulled out from under us multiple times with changes to the site, bugs, performance problems and unannounced feature cancellations. At the same time, their members told us our web app was the best, it enabled them to use the site and filled in huge gaps in the official offerings, and please don’t ever change it. So, to see Reddit act that way to API developers was unacceptable. Plus, Lemmy/kbin is way better.

I tend to avoid apps in general too but I did use the Reddit third party apps for privacy on mobile.

I never logged in on RIF and used Firefox focus as my browser when clicking links (essentially private browsing session for each click) to avoid being tracked.

If I wanted to contribute I’d just copy the link and paste into normal Firefox mobile where I was logged in and upvote or comment.

I don’t feel the need to take those kinds of steps on lemmy because as you say we’re not interlopers and we’re here to try to build a better place and honestly it’s working really well.

Discussions are civil and thoughtful and even disagreements are learning experiences for the most part.

Yeah, Reddit hasn’t really changed the API itself with these recent changes, they just made the keys to it cost money.

An API is basically a communication standard between the app and Reddit, that standard changes as new features are added or decisions are made. The app might make a request like getvideo and expect to get a video with the .redditvid extension. Now let’s say Reddit decided to fix their shitty video player and now they start rolling out a new video format, .redditvidgood, and update the API so that getvideo returns this new type.

Now the app makes a getvideo request and gets a .redditvidgood video, but it has no idea how to handle this format, it’s still expecting the old .redditvid format. At best the app will fail to load these new videos but still function otherwise, at worst the app will crash any time it tries to load a video. In this example, even with the best case scenario most videos don’t work anymore. It’s only a matter of time before a change completely breaks all apps that don’t update for the current API, and only a dev with the source code can make those updates to the app.

What about apps like Relay for Reddit? They are continuing with a paid model in the future and are complying with the API changes. They should be unaffected by this, if I’ve understood correctly? Relay is my app of choice.

In the case of “legit” apps that are following the new rules, they will be fine. The dev will likely have knowledge of an upcoming API change before it’s released so they can update their app for it before it breaks anything.

The problem with revanced apps is there is no dev making these updates, at least not that I’m aware of.

My abuse of the report button, by the way, was because I kept reporting people for being outright malicious towards religious users. And since one’s belief system is protected class as far as discrimination goes, I thought I was doing the right thing. And when I tried to explain this, my appeal was ignored. I still miss it sometimes because there are a lot of groups that just haven’t been established on this platform yet. Sure we have a gaming channel, but we don’t have an in-depth discussion for Mortal Kombat or sonic the hedgehog. And with the new Mortal Kombat coming out in september, oh damn do I miss the old joint sometimes. Oh well, has Reddit gets worse and worse it’ll eventually be left in the dust. It’s not like I was banned for doing anything wrong. Just trying to uphold the terms of service when the website would not.

My appeal was ignored as well. I even gave them an example of a thread with dozens of comments that were just like mine but against a corporate executive asking what the difference was and they still just gave me the canned response. The only conclusion I can draw from that is the Reddit admins must want to create a safe space for child molesters specifically.

The users of reddit paid for the server costs many times over using the awards system. When it first started they kept saying how many years’ server costs they had in the bank, just from selling reddit gold.

I don’t mean reddit. You made a general statemet that you shouldn’t pay to access user generated content.

Even Lemmy has users contributing tens of thousands of dollars to pay for servers. Someone has to pay.

Well we’ve both given one example: passionate users who believe in and want to support the platform.

Another example would be the business itself through the data they exploit. In fact, if they’re collecting and exploiting user data, thus generating a profit from the user, then really they should be paying the user for the data.

You can’t sell a car without paying for the nuts and bolts, yet data companies don’t pay us for the materials we provide that are integral to their product.

There’s certainly some grey area with a free service that collects data for free. I’d still argue this is wrong, just because the value exchange is completely disproportionate. But when you’re paying for the product/service and they still collect your data (looking at you, Microsoft), then that’s just really scummy and wrong. With the reddit API charges, reddit is asking users to pay reddit so they can give reddit data that reddit can profit from. That’s fucked up.

That’s fair. With the reddit example, the data reddit collects is used for advertising. Because reddit accounts are anonymous, there’s not much to sell to third parties.

But with a third party reddit app, reddit can’t show ads. The data is pretty useless. I’m not convinced third party apps can be a meaningful part of the revenue stream.
