What he’s saying: Paul has an “unhinged obsession with me,” and his motive for the hearing is to “get me to say something — anything — that could vindicate his repeated public pledges that I end up, in his words, quote, behind bars unquote,” Fauci said.

“Although it pains me to do so … under the advice of my attorneys, I will invoke my right under the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution to refrain from answering your questions,” Fauci said.

Biden gave Fauci a full preemptive pardon. Because everybody knew that Republicans would go after Fauci on made up bullshit.

Fauci dedicated his life to saving other peoples’ lives. Republicans are evil.

I mean im old. Back when I was in college they seemed at least more sincere but I dunno I kinda now wonder if they were always sorta a right wing disaster recovery option. Anyway if your young and at that time it was usually victimless crimes and that is appealing to younger folk and seems like they are very big on individual rights. It did/does not take long though to see how it unravels. Pretty soon you see they are essentially against public infrastructure and want to privatize everything which just does not work for many things. Private enterprise needing real competition to work. You realize to that they pretty much want no regulation and you quickly realize that yeah legalization might be great but it has to be regulated and bad impacts need to be minimized. Again this was when they were not even as goofy and it does not take long to realize it does not really work. This is why while I like the young turks from what I see of it I don’t trust cenk. I just can’t respect someone who in an adult educated life would take so long to realize how right wing things don’t add up. Its great he has seen the light but he might have or just realized he would never be a major player given his race with the side he was initially cheering for.

I think it’s because fauci was presidently pardoned and that changes the rules since technically you can’t go to jail for what they’re questioning on so he doesn’t need to plead the 5th. But I assume he didn’t want to open doors to other shit

I have said it before and I will say it again. The reublican party as a whole has to go. I get the problems with the democrats but we need to make a new floor for crappiness which the dems are perfect for. They can split or a third party comes up or both but its not going to happen until the republicans cannot win anywhere close to a majority.

I imagine the cause for the idiocy is because the NIH began funding gain of function research on bat corona viruses (Covid) at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in 2014… when Obama was President. And they did that while placing a halt on most US government lab research in the same direction because there had been biohazard incidents and the safety was in question.

It’s a stupid game, because it’s a type of research that had been going on with various diseases in various labs for many years before this, but Trump has some weird insanity relating to Obama and trying to force Fauci to say something that they could use to reveal US involvement in the origin of Covid and pin it on Obama and Democrats… eh. Not super surprised.

a bigger deal was trump killed funding for people who specifically looked for viruses jumping into farm animals in china. he of course thought why are we paying to do this when china should. Similar to how they stopped paying to innoculation cattle south of us so screw worm would not creep up here. The last person in that program left in something like october of 2019. I mean he could not have screwed up worse if he was trying to.

I’m not… fuck, is reading comprehension that bad even on Lemmy? I’ve been a leftist and science nerd my entire life. I’m not saying Obama bad. I’m certainly not saying Trump good.

I’m giving my best guess at the reasons behind the current administration trying to grill Fauci at this given point in time. The NIH funding for WIV to research GoF in bat corona viruses started in a year Obama happened to be President. Trump has some irrational (likely partly racist) hatred of Obama. The Midterms are coming up, and looking very bad for Republicans.

It seems reasonable that Trump or shitsack Miller or someone else in his Inner Circle of Evil Twats is trying to use this as another potential way to stir up shit or at least try to throw more shit at Democrats, before the election. That isn’t saying I think Democrats deserve any of that shit. But even Maga fuckwits are starting to lose confidence and trust in Trump, and they’re very stupid, so if they could get Fauci to say slip up in front of cameras and the Senate in a way that let them start screaming “OBAMA MADE COVID!” the majority of the morons who might have been slipping off the idiot train back into reality and rational thought would likely believe it enough to vote the hard R again.

Nobody is doing anything according to your world view presented by the media you consume. There have been massive protests, but the surveillance state backed by the biggest military in the world doesn’t give a fuck what we want, and has shown it takes no issue with killing protestors. The billionaire parasites own the media and the vast majority of the means of communication, making it difficult to network and coordinate. Look at the guy facing terrorism charges for usung his duress pin code. He protested against Cop City, was placed on a watch list, and slapped with bullshit charges as soon as possible.

            There have been massive protests

There have been significant protests, but they have not been exactly massive, and the demands have been pretty lame.
Several European countries have had bigger protests recently over less than what the Trump regime represents.

I acknowledge that there are good Americans too, but they are not the ones in control, and they are the minority.
USA as a country remains extremely fucked, the fact that ICE has been allowed to continue their abuse and killings for so long is insane, and only possible because the American police has formed precedence and done the same almost since the independence. USA is so used to violence and abuse of minorities, they don’t even notice, and they think it’s normal, because in USA it actually is normal. A tradition that is probably stillbaccepted because of long periods of slavery, and later oppressing people of color. To now oppressing those and other minorities too.
Democracy is not the mentality of the American people, oppression is.

There have been significant protests, but they have not been exactly massive

4/5 of the largest protests in US history have happened since 2025 directly as a response to trumps shit.

Several European countries have had bigger protests recently

              Which ones? How big?

USA is so used to violence and abuse of minorities, they don’t even notice, and they think it’s normal

Spoken like someone who’s never actually dealt with anything other than our news filtered through your news.

I acknowledge that there are good Americans too, but they are not the ones in control, and they are the minority.

Considering you’re in Europe, the world experts in imperialism, brutal ethnic suppression, you still wear fucking blackface, you don’t even see the issues with your treatment of migrants as a problem, and a fair number of the protests I found while trying to figure out which one you meant were “anti migrant”, I feel like that’s a bit of a rich sentiment.

You do know that one of the most offensive policies trump has been pursuing is to rollback our citizenship rules to those that are the norm in Europe?

The US is much larger than almost any European country. Also, the protests have been the largest in American history, which I think is significant considering how brow beaten the people are by media, politicians, and the education system. You act like there is a switch somewhere that will make all this better, but with the difficulty of modifying our constitution the only way that really changes is a total revolution, which does not guarantee a better government in it’s place, but does guarantee pain for all but those that can afford to escape. Why don’t you get that this isn’t easy? Trust me, I wish change had happened sooner, and I have used my vote and my voice to advocate for change, but I’m also willing to consider nuance and be sympathetic, which appears to be beyond your grasp at this time.

No to both, Americans went home thinking they’d done their due diligence. After all the actual acute problems mostly hit minorities, and everything will hopefully be fine after the next election.
You can whitewash this however you want, the end result remains that the Trump administration is continuing unhindered by any part of the American society and “checks and balances” that clearly don’t work.
Kudos to the ones that tried, but they don’t change that USA is continuing the decent the Americans have voted for. Giving insane Republicans the majority in the house the senate and the Presidential position.
As the sycophants say. 3 strikes and you’re out!! The American population has done it as decisively as is possible. There are no ifs or buts about it. The mentality of the American people is clear. And it is the absolute worst of all democracies in the world together with Israel, which is also a country of delusional religious fanatics.

                  The Americans in question

Waaaah waaaaaaaaah! If I was in America I’d strap on my political change bootstraps and take my local bus on a 15 hour drive to DC and …?.. until everything was fixed

                  • All media and media delivery platforms are controlled by less than 10 [fascist] men and they’re lying to you. Resistance efforts are growing despite the suppression which makes large scale coordination difficult
                  • “Americans elected” is the most farcical shit if you know anything about the operation of US elections since 1999. SCOTUS quite literally declared GWB president in an election that he lost as a kickback for decades of legislative insurgency from the Heritage Foundation. Since then it’s been a free for all: new forms of voter suppression, foreign funding, voting machine shell companies, absurd gerrymandering, mass digital political surveillance, outright false elector conspiracies, etc… But sure, the guy who has 6 solid years of negative net approval rating is who American voters want.
                  • “Trump administration is continuing unhindered” is exactly the narrative they want you to eat up. They release a bunch of draconian headlines, break some things and declare victory. In reality their performance has been shockingly poor when compared to the apparant strength of their position. The main success has been lining their pockets; on-the-ground operations slog and challenges in court mitigate or reverse nearly everything else.

Not to be all “well aktually,” but McCarthy headed the second Red Scare. You’re absolutely right that there is a pattern of using the government to suppress the left, I just thought it was worth pointing out that it’s been going on for as long as there has been an organized left in the US.

          From Wikipedia:

The Overman Committee was a special five-man subcommittee of the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary chaired by North Carolina Democrat Lee Slater Overman. First charged with investigating German subversion during World War I, its mandate was extended on February 4, 1919, just a day after the announcement of the Seattle General Strike, to study “any efforts being made to propagate in this country the principles of any party exercising or claiming to exercise any authority in Russia” and “any effort to incite the overthrow of the Government of this country”. The Committee’s hearings into Bolshevik propaganda, conducted from February 11 to March 10, 1919, developed an alarming image of Bolshevism as an imminent threat to the U.S. government and American values. The Committee’s final report appeared in June 1919.

      Meh.

I mostly deal with corporate lawyers, and their advice is almost always:

      1. Don’t do it
      2. Spend more money on lawyers

This is in their best interests, not necessarily their client’s best interests.

I don’t know how this applies to criminal law, obviously.

love “rapeublican”, and you’re not wrong, but I think its true that Dems were also on the list. I assume many more rapub than Dem, but dont have the data to prove it, because Biden failed to release the full list and the Dems and Rapeubliicans both work for their rich donors, not the people. So they are incentivized to keep hiding it.

A pandemic embarrasses an entire political party and confirms their inability to do anything other than blame minorities. Since they can’t blame the virus for their failures, they blame the closest thing to a virus - the scientific community that was focused on saving American lives.
