    Why is everyone surprised?

Frankly, dog food is the least disgusting thing she’s had in her mouth recently.

She positively highlights that it comes from “protected” Canadian bison so there are “no hormones” and “no vaccines given to the bison”.

These people are now claiming food, and pet food, need to be unvaccinated?

On an industrial scale (like we have in the USA), yes, we vaccinate the hell out of livestock. I understand that it has to do with their terrible conditions and diets. If they weren’t vaccinated and fed antibiotics like crazy most wouldn’t make it to slaughter weight or be able to keep producing (milk or eggs).

One example of cow vaccination information: https://extension.umn.edu/beef-cow-calf/cattle-vaccine-basics

Eh, the antibiotics are only in part to keep them from dying. It also promotes faster growth. In actuality, the majority of the time they don’t need antibiotics to make it to slaughter.

Furthermore, it’s been argued that this gung-ho attitude with antibiotics is promoting the growth of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.

Mostly in the shit pools probably, but organic beef doesn’t have it (though there are different animal welfare problems from that practice too).

I’m working my family up to 3 vegetarian night’s a week. Getting my 84 y/o father in-law on board hasn’t event been hard. Beef is generally an every other week kinda food, but still a guilty pleasure.

It depends. Cows are usually taken from individual farms and put en masse in lots called “feed lots” as an intermediary before the slaughterhouse. These lots are packed together and the animals experience a ton of stress. It’s very easy for them to get sick here due to the conditions, and if one cow gets bad diarrhea, they all might get it. So they tend to treat them all prophylactically to prevent that. The real solution is to ban feed lots and to revise how we do slaughter so it’s more sanitary.

Look at the EU for instance - they can eat raw eggs because they don’t treat them the same as us and they vaccinate their chickens for salmonella. You can also eat chicken tartare in France for this reason.

We don’t have to slaughter animals like this and we shouldn’t.

yes, because debilitating viruses could wipe out herds, especially for those factory farmers where animals are living in destitute situations.

it’s also one of the reasons why eating horse meat is illegal in the U.S because horses are pumped with stuff because theyre raised to be companions for work rather than for consumption.

Like humans, there’s a set of more or less mandatory vaccines.

It’s when you reach an industrial scale of factory farming that animals are pumped full of shit just so they make it to adulthood.

As someone who worked at a place that boarded pets, you bet we tried most of the dog food at one point. The only thing I remember decently after all these years is that treats can be pretty decent. Someone had some chicken jerky, no spices or anything. That was certainly the best. Milkbones are bland and dry. Can’t remember much else, like kibble and such, which really just says it’s not horrendous and not great.

I remember years ago some blogger would eat lots of weird things and review them and he had an article where he tried different dog treats. He said something along the lines of “I now know why dogs lick their own asses. It’s to get the taste of Beggin’ Strips out of their mouths.”

Ended up using dog shampoo while staying at my parents place for 2 weeks. It made my hair weird but how I figured it out was it was in one of those clear bottles with the picture on the inside behind the semi clear aqua blue shampoo. So when I picked it up for the 6th time I actually tilted it passed the point where I could see “Shampoo” and up to what I thought would be wheat or yellow flowers.

As someone who has eaten expired MREs the term palatable can mean very different things to different people. I ate a spaghetti MRE once that my grandmother said “smells like moldy paper towels” yet I stilled shovelled it down my throat. They tasted like old cardboard.

It was acceptable I think there was just something wrong with that one in particular. Usually they just smell funky and taste fine. Also all the side shit was pretty good and the chocolate bar hadn’t seperated at all so I assume there was just something wrong with the pasta.

My parents, for God knows what reason, leave their dog treats in a bowl on the table. They look like oyster crackers.

I walked in one day to find my aunt eating them. I laughed and told her they were dog treats, and she was like “i was wondering why they tasted a bit weird… But they’re not bad.” Lol

Let’s be real, here. This lady and her ilk are a terror. But…it’s 2024. Dog food toppers are like, freeze dried peanut butter. Beef broth. Basically saltless human food.

Why are we making this a big thing? I used to work in a dog food store. We would eat some sample treats that we’d get because they were basically sugarless cookies. And they’re all made in human grade factories because it’s a selling point. Shit, there was one dog treat company that made dog treats that were too sweet for me to enjoy.

There is plenty of disgusting, vile, inhuman shit these people do. Why stretch for something to trash them with? Pick one of the millions of others right within reach.

It just feels odd to have an upvote for simply commenting. I mean, it’s not like I’m getting life points or anything. Up or downvotes don’t really matter. It just feels… disingenuous? to have some sort of point for - what I feel - is nothing. So, I just remove it. Maybe I’ll retrain myself to leave it? IDK.

Grandma Lucy’s organic dog treats are made to be fully human and dog safe and I find them just as tasty as the dog does. They’re like unsweetened Teddy Grahams. I know this because my brother-in-law gets them for his dog and is very amused to offer them as a snack to people as he and the dog both enjoy them.
